Sports Mole analyses AC Milan's 1-0 victory over Juventus in Serie A on Sunday.

AC Milan have defeated Italian champions and current league leaders Juventus 1-0 at San Siro in Serie A.

In what proved to an entertaining and intense game of football, Robinho's penalty just after the half-hour mark proved to be the difference.

It was Juventus's only second defeat of the season in Serie A and their first away from home.

Here Sports Mole takes a closer look to see if the result was fair.

Match statistics:

Milan:
Shots 15
On target 6
Possession 39%
Corners 5
Fouls 16

Juventus:
Shots 13
On target 2
Possession 61%
Corners 6
Fouls 10

Was the result fair?

Yes. It was a very lively and intense game of football that was delicately balanced until the final minute. However, Milan were more imaginative, more penetrative and more urgent while going on the attack, and also showed more energy.

Milan's performance

Massimiliano Allegri will be pleased with Milan's display against the Italian champions on Sunday evening. At times they had to defend desperately, but overall the way they denied the Juventus attackers the chance and space to pass their way into their area and launched counter-attacks must be praised. The link-up plays between Robinho and Stephan El Shaarawy also looked encouraging, and so did the midfield's ability to combat against that of Juve.

Juventus's performance

Juventus failed to show much imagination in their attacking forays and also could not penetrate the Milan defence down the middle as much as they would have liked to. The final ball was missing from the Bianconeri's game at San Siro. Coach Antonio Conte will also be displeased with his defenders getting caught out time and again and leaving it too late to clear the dangers.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Robinho: The Brazilian has struggled to play regularly this season but he marked his return to the Milan starting lineup in style. Besides slotting in the penalty that eventually proved to be the difference between the two sides at San Siro, Robinho's intelligent passes, runs down the channels, link-up plays with El Shaarawy and consistent hard work all were there for everyone to note.

Referee's performance

There will be doubts on Nicola Rizzoli's decision to award Milan a penalty on the half-hour mark when he adjudged Mauricio Isla to have handled the ball inside the area. Other than that, there was no other controversial moment, as Rizzoli handled well the pressure of officiating one of the biggest games in Italian football.

What next?

Milan: The Rossoneri will aim to build on their win by defeating Catania in Serie A on Friday.

Juventus: The Bianconeri will be looking to return to winning ways with victory over Torino in the Turin derby next weekend.
