Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Jan Vertonghen was 'furious' at Mauricio Pochettino's decision to leave him out against Aston Villa, according to a report.

Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Jan Vertonghen was reportedly 'furious' at Mauricio Pochettino's decision to leave him out of the club's Premier League opener against Aston Villa last weekend.

Vertonghen was surprisingly left out of the squad for the clash against Dean Smith's side, which Spurs won 3-1 courtesy of a late double from Harry Kane.

According to the Daily Mail, Pochettino omitted Vertonghen after being unimpressed with the Belgium international's fitness during pre-season.

The report claims that the decision left the 32-year-old incredibly unhappy, with some of his teammates surprised that he stayed to watch the clash with the newly-promoted outfit on Saturday evening.

Vertonghen has made 285 appearances for the Premier League club in all competitions since arriving from Ajax.

Last season, the defender made 34 appearances in all competitions, although a hamstring injury saw him miss three Champions League matches and 10 Premier League fixtures.
