Manchester City reportedly remain optimistic about their chances of tying veteran midfielder Fernandinho down to a new deal.

Manchester City are reportedly confident about their chances of keeping Fernandinho on the books next season.

The Brazilian midfielder is due to become a free agent at the end of this month, and he has been included on the Premier League's list of players set to be released this summer.

Fernandinho played a key role in City's run to the Champions League final in the 2020-21 campaign, though, and speculation has been rife surrounding a possible contract extension.

According to The Mirror, Pep Guardiola's side still expect Fernandinho to commit his future to the club, but the 36-year-old is after a two-year extension, while City are only willing to offer another year.

The report claims that Guardiola rates Fernandinho's influence in the dressing room very highly, and while there is a disagreement over the length of his new deal, City are hopeful of employing him in a behind-the-scenes role when he retires.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk man featured 37 times for the Premier League champions in all competitions last season, and he has won four top-flight titles, one FA Cup and six EFL Cups while in Manchester.
