Live Coverage: Transfer deadline day - as it happened

Relive deadline day in the transfer window with Sports Mole's minute-by-minute coverage of the action.

It proved to be a dramatic conclusion to the summer transfer window, with a number of clubs desperate to complete last-minute deals.

Arsenal left it late to secure the services of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid, but the German international joined the London outfit for a figure believed to be in the region of £42.5m.

Manchester United supporters were also made to wait for Marouane Fellaini, but his signing for £27.5m was also confirmed following the 11pm deadline.

Despite the sale of the Belgian, it proved to be a successful window for Everton, who secured loan moves for Romelu Lukaku and Gareth Barry, while also signing James McCarthy from Wigan Athletic.

In other news, West Bromwich Albion broke their transfer record to sign Stephane Sessegnon from Sunderland, while Victor Anichebe also arrived at the Hawthorns from Everton.

Give or take the odd penny, Premier League clubs spent at least £625m in this summer's window. Read how the dramatic day unfolded in Sports Mole's minute-by-minute live coverage of the action below.

Good afternoon all! It's that time again, transfer deadline day is well and truly upon us. Clubs in the Premier League and Europe have been busy already today, but there are just over seven hours to go until the window is closed for business until January.

Hands up if you thought a few weeks ago that today would be centred around Gareth Bale, Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney? Well, Bale finally completed his reported £85m move to Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur yesterday - spoiling it for all the deadline day fans! With regards to Suarez and Rooney, unless some late movement happens, both players look to be staying put at Liverpool and Manchester United respectively. Never say never though!

The biggest signing of the summer transfer window so far is of course, as mentioned earlier, Bale's switch to the Spanish giants. He is now the most expensive player that football has ever seen, eclipsing the £80m paid by Madrid to Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo. Bale passed his medical this morning and was presented to the supporters at the Bernabeu - lots of happy faces as you can imagine.

So, that big-money move is complete - what about others? Today has so far been dominated by Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil. It appears that the German international feels that his position at Madrid is under threat following the arrival of Bale and manager Carlo Ancelotti's fondness of summer signing Isco. Reports have claimed that Ozil is currently having a medical in Munich ahead of a switch to Arsenal, who let's face it, could do with a big name coming through the doors at the Emirates.

There seems to be conflicting reports with regards to the fee, but according to Sky Sports News, the Gunners are prepared to offer £42.5m for the German. Nothing is confirmed as yet, and with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain previously being linked with the player, I wouldn't say that this is a done deal just yet.

Sticking with Arsenal, it has been reported that the North London outfit have begun talks with Chelsea over possibly signing out-of-favour striker Demba Ba. The Gunners have previously failed in their attempts to sign a forward (Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez come to mind), but it appears that Wenger has turned his attention to former Newcastle striker Ba. According to Sky Sports News, a fee is not yet close to being agreed between the two parties.

What's going on with the English champions then? Aside from the capture of young Uruguayan Guillermo Varela, David Moyes has failed to sign any high-profile players. However, Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has claimed that United are prepared to meet Athletic Bilbao's release clause of £30m for Ander Herrera.

RUMOUR! If we step aside from the North-West for a minute, let's move south towards Crystal Palace. Sky Sports News report that the Eagles have completed the signing of Adrian Mariappa from Reading.

Back to the Champions! So, all reports indicate that Herrera could be on his way to Old Trafford, but what about Marouane Fellaini? The Everton midfielder has been linked with United for some time, and we all know he was part of that joint £28m bid, including Leighton Baines, which was rejected by the Toffees. Overnight reports stated that Fellaini is prepared to hand in a transfer request, but it all seems to be quiet on that front at the moment.

Fellaini's possible move to Old Trafford could hinder on Everton's interest in Wigan Athletic's James McCarthy or Fernando from Porto. The midfielder has emerged as a target for the Merseyside club, who, according to BBC Sport, are keen to get a work permit for the Porto player. If manager Roberto Martinez manages to get his man, you wonder what that would mean for McCarthy.

RUMOUR! This could be an interesting one... L'Equipe have claimed on their website that Paris Saint-Germain hope to open talks with Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata ahead of a proposed move. While Blues manager Jose Mourinho has stated that the Spaniard is not for sale, Mata has so far struggled to secure a regular place in Mourinho's team.

Let's switch to the League One and Championship - Bristol City manager Sean O'Driscoll has denied that Blackpool have made a bid for striker Sam Baldock.

O'Driscoll told BBC Radio Bristol: "Nobody has contacted me, I'm not sure where that came from."

RUMOUR! According to Sky Sports News, Swansea City have agreed a deal with Getafe to sign Alvaro Vazquez on a loan deal with a view to a permanent move.

Arsenal are understood to have a 'verbal agreement' with Real Madrid's Mesut Ozil after speaking with him on the phone. The German international is understood to be having a medical in Munich.

Remember, we have just over seven hours to go until the window slams shut. Here are the main names swirling around the gossip columns at the moment on our Sports Mole Instagram account...

According to BBC Sport, Arsenal will announce the signing of Ozil within the next few hours. I guess Wenger kept to his word when he claimed that the Gunners would bring in a "quality" player.

RUMOUR! It's not all about the Premier League, Sky Sports News have claimed that Wigan Athletic have made a verbal offer of £6m plus add-ons for Blackburn Rovers striker Jordan Rhodes.

DONE DEAL! Liverpool have had plenty of new arrivals this summer, but they've let one of their players go. Dani Pacheco has announced that following a loan stint he has signed for AD Alcorcon on a permanent deal.

Pacheco wrote on Twitter: "I'm proud to announce that I'm joining @AD_Alcorcon permanent. I wanna say massive thanks to LFC for all they gave me in 6 years."

Speaking of Liverpool, they were busy this morning, wrapping up three deals. Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori completed his switch to Anfield today, while fellow defender Mamadou Sakho signed from Paris Saint-Germain. The Reds wrapped up their business with a season-long deal for Chelsea winger Victor Moses.

It was reported earlier today that Stephen Ireland was close to a switch to Stoke City. Well, according to the Daily Mail, the midfielder has arrived at the Potters for a medical.

DONE DEAL! Blackpool have announced that they have signed right-back Bradley Orr on a short-term loan until January from Blackburn Rovers.

DONE DEAL! It appears that West Bromwich Albion have found their cover following the injury blow to goalkeeper Ben Foster. Lee Camp has signed for the club on a free transfer.

According to the Daily Mail, Sunderland are close to announcing the signing of Liverpool striker Fabio Borini on loan following a successful medical.

We have some more details on Lee Camp's switch to The Hawthorns. The goalkeeper has signed a rolling monthly contract until January.

It's been reported that Wigan have made a bid for Blackburn striker Jordan Rhodes, but BBC Sport have quoted Blackbun manager Gary Bowyer as saying: "No bids have been made and there is no point anyway because he isn't for sale. How many more times do we have to say it."

It appears that Manchester United could complete the signing of Marouane Fellaini from Everton before tonight's 11pm deadline as the midfielder has been given extra time to stay away from the Belgium squad. According to the national team's Twitter account, Fellaini will join up with his teammates "later".

Sticking with Everton, reports have emerged claiming that their loan move for Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry could fall through due to City preferring to sell the former Aston Villa player as opposed to offloading him on a temporary basis.

While everyone seems to be talking about Fellaini, Manchester United's move for Leighton Baines has gone quiet. According to Sky Sports News, the Toffees are confident of keeping hold of the England international in this window.

RUMOUR! West Bromwich Albion have reportedly agreed a fee with Cardiff City over the sale of striker Peter Odemwingie, who is said to have accepted personal terms with the Welsh outfit.

RUMOUR! According to BBC Sport, Chelsea are willing to let Josh McEachran and Nathaniel Chalobah leave the club for fellow Premier League outfits on loan.

It appears that the 'Mata to PSG' story could be building. French television station Infosport Plus are reporting that the Spain international has opened talks with the Ligue 1 outfit following an approach. If you remember, Mata has been linked with both Arsenal and Manchester United. If the midfielder does end up at Parc des Princes, does this mean that the Blues refused Mata a move to another Premier League club?

RUMOUR! It seems to be getting a bit sour at Brighton & Hove Albion. According to the Daily Mail, midfielder Liam Bridcutt is angry with the club for not allowing him to speak to Nottingham Forest or Crystal Palace following interest from both clubs.

We have some more on the developing 'Ozil to Arsenal' story. Reports have claimed that confirmation could be made at 6pm UK time, while Goal.com have stated that Ozil has put pen to paper on a five-year deal worth £130,000 a week. The fee is believed to be in the region of £40m.

RUMOUR! Perhaps Arsenal's swoop for Ozil will not be the club's final piece of business today. According to the Daily Mail, the Gunners are pondering a swoop for Paris Saint-Germain's Javier Pastore. While he could consider a move away from the Parc des Princes due to his drop down the rankings, it is understood that Pastore wants to stay in France.

Turns out there is some movement on Leighton Baines! However, the movement relates to the full-back joining up with his England teammates. The Daily Mail has claimed that manager Roy Hodgson will allow Baines to leave the squad temporarily if a successful bid is made by Manchester United.

Newcastle fans will be relieved to hear that midfielder Yohan Cabaye is expected to remain with the Magpies. Sky Sports News are reporting that following an initial bid from Arsenal, Newcastle have not received any improved offers and expect the Frenchman to stay put.

RUMOUR! I'm sure that Tottenham Hotspur fans will not be disappointed if their club fail to sign any new faces today following the number of acquisitions that they have already made. However, there were reports that Spurs were offered Hulk on loan from Zenit St Petersburg. Despite their opportunity to sign him, according to Goal.com, Spurs have been put off by Zenit's request of a £10m loan fee.

If you've been living under a rock, then you will be unaware that Gareth Bale has ended his six-year stint at Tottenham Hotspur for the glitz and glamour of Real Madrid.

During his unveiling, the Welshman said: "I just want to say that it is amazing to be here. I hope I can help bring success to the club and that we can win the club's 10th European Cup this season."

He also said a few words in Spanish, and it wasn't completely uncomfortable viewing as you may have thought!

Earlier, we mentioned that Manchester United are prepared to pay Athletic Bilbao a release clause of around £30m for midfielder Ander Herrera. Former Manchester United assistant boss Mike Phelan has been speaking to BBC Sport about his qualities.

He said: "He's obviously a dynamic midfield player. The way he plays the game, he's more of a link player, he makes things happen as far as keeping the continuity going. At Bilbao he was quite the fulcrum of the operation."

RUMOUR! Fulham have received a £3m bid from Besiktas for winger Kerim Frei, according to the Daily Mail.

A number of Manchester United fans have expressed their discontent at David Moyes's unwillingness to play midfielder Shinji Kagawa so far this season. The Japan international's time on the bench has prompted transfer rumours, with some reports today claiming that Paris Saint-Germain are interested. It's all gone quiet with regards to Kagawa, so I would assume that he will remain at Old Trafford.

Let's stay in the North-West and take a trip to a Merseyside club. No, not Liverpool - don't be greedy you Reds fans, you signed three players before midday! We're of course referring to Everton and their pursuit of Wigan Athletic's James McCarthy. While there had been suggestions that the move would depend on the status of Marouane Fellaini, according to Sky Sports News, Everton are hopeful of securing a deal for McCarthy regardless of what happens with Fellaini.

However, it has been reported that Everton's move for Fernando will only go ahead if Fellaini leaves for Manchester United. Just to remind you, the Belgium national team have given Fellaini extra time off, which makes you think that it's a matter of time before he becomes a United player.

RUMOUR! According to the Daily Mail, former Liverpool midfielder Mohamed Sissoko is in talks with Championship side Reading over a move from Paris Saint-Germain.

DEADLINE! The summer transfer window in Germany has slammed shut. Transfers had to be made in the Bundesliga by 5pm UK time.

DONE DEAL! Cheltenham Town have completed the signing of midfielder David Noble on loan until January from League One side Rotherham United.

RUMOUR! The Daily Mail are reporting that Aston Villa midfielder Barry Bannan is having a medical at Crystal Palace ahead of a move to Selhurst Park. If you remember, earlier this summer, Bannan was close to joining Blackburn Rovers, but the deal fell through.

It appears that goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano is close to joining Arsenal from Palermo on a loan deal.

Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini told Stadio News 24: "Stefano Sorrentino and Samir Ujkani will be our goalkeepers this season. We haven’t received any offers for them, whereas Viviano will go to Arsenal."

Earlier, we informed you of reports that Arsenal have contacted Chelsea over the availability of striker Demba Ba. It is believed by Sky Sports News that the Blues want a £3m loan fee, but the Gunners have offered half of that. Despite Chelsea's willingness to offload the former Newcastle United striker, the Blues are reportedly not trying to push Ba out of the club.

Staying with Chelsea, reports in France have claimed that Juan Mata is in talks with Paris Saint-Germain, but according to BBC Sport journalist Ben Smith, the Blues have rubbished reports.

He wrote on Twitter: "#CFC have heard nothing of PSG's reported interest in Juan Mata. Barring 'silly money', Mata looks like staying at Stamford Bridge."

Remember when Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was going to Arsenal? That hasn't happened. Remember when Luis Suarez was linked with a late approach from Real Madrid? That hasn't happened...yet! It's been very quiet on the Suarez-front, but widespread reports have indicated that Liverpool will reject any last-minute bids for the Uruguayan international.

DONE DEAL! Carlisle United have completed the signing of left-back Conor Townsend from Hull City on a one-month loan deal.

Let's bring you another snippet of what Gareth Bale has said today following his world-record move to Real Madrid. The Welshman spoke of his new teammate Cristiano Ronaldo during a press conference.

"Ronaldo for me is the best player in the world and he was a factor for me in deciding to come here. [He] is the boss here. He is the best player in the world. I want to learn from him."

There had been reports that Ronaldo's ego was slightly damaged when hearing that Bale was more expensive than him. (Ronaldo cost Madrid £80m from Manchester United in 2009). However, Bale has done his best to ensure that the Portugal captain is still the 'main man' at the Bernabeu.

DONE DEAL! Crystal Palace have announced the signing of defender Adrian Mariappa on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

Mariappa has been speaking to Palace's official website following his move from Reading. He said: “I'm delighted to be joining Palace and playing in the Premier League again. It's something everyone dreams of doing.

“Playing there last season was a great challenge as it is is the biggest league in the world and you're playing against the best players, so when this opportunity came to me I jumped at it.

”Selhurst Park is always a great place to play, the atmosphere has always been amazing and I've had some great games against this club.

“I want to prove I can play at this level an I'm sure that will be the same for everyone in the squad as we aim to stay in the Premier League.”

DONE DEAL! Stoke City confirm the arrival of Aston Villa midfielder Stephen Ireland on a season-long loan.

Ireland joins the Potters following a disappointing period with Villa. The midfielder last played a Premier League game for the Midlands outfit in December 2012. Potters chief executive Tony Scholes has spoken about Ireland's arrival.

He told the club's official website: "Stephen is a player that Mark knows really well and when the opportunity arose he was keen to add him to his midfield and attacking options.

“Arguably the most successful period of Stephen’s career to date was when he played for Mark at Manchester City and we hope that he can rediscover that form.”

According to the Daily Mail, Everton's move for Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry is not dead in the water. Both parties are said to be haggling over a loan or permanent deal, with City preferring the latter option. However, it appears that Barry's move could depend on the future of Marouane Fellaini.

RUMOUR! Norwich City are in talks with West Ham United over a potential season-long loan for Ricardo Vaz Te, according to Sky Sports News.

If you remember, Vaz Te submitted a transfer request last week after he was told that he was not in manager Sam Allardyce's plans.

It's been a very quiet day for Newcastle United. Manager Alan Pardew recently stated that he wanted to strengthen his attacking options, but following the news that a deal for Lyon's Bafetimbi Gomis had fallen through, it appears that the Magpies will continue the season with the squad they have.

As we just mentioned, Norwich City have made their interest known to West Ham over the signing of Ricardo Vaz Te, but according to the Daily Mail, the Hammers have rejected a loan deal from the Canaries.

A development has reportedly been made in Everton's pursuit of Porto's Fernando, but it's not a good one! BBC Sport are claiming that no deal has or will be reached. This could affect Marouane Fellaini's predicted move to Manchester United in jeopardy as it was understood that Fernando would come in to replace the Belgium international.

Okay, so it's 6.15pm and there has been no announcement as yet regarding Mesut Ozil's impending move from Real Madrid to Arsenal. We were led to believe that confirmation would be made at 6pm. Is the deal off?! Probably not, just late.

DONE DEAL! Arsenal fans, your club have completed the capture of a new signing, but it's probably not the one you were expecting... Palermo have confirmed that goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano has moved to the Emirates on a season-long loan.

DONE DEAL! Aston Villa have made their seventh signing this summer in the form of Czech international striker Libor Kozak from Serie A side Lazio.

The 6ft 4ins forward, who has signed a four-year contract, has spoken to the club's official website.

He said: "I'm really happy to be at Aston Villa and I'm ready for this new step in my career. I hope it's a good step for me and also for Villa because everything is about the team.

"This is a big club, a very historic club with a fantastic fanbase and, for me, this is really important. From when I was a young boy, I have dreamt of playing in the Premier League and to do this with a club such as Villa is incredibly motivating. It's real now and I'm very happy about this."

Villa manager Paul Lambert added: "We've been on this one for the last few months, trying to bring him to the Club, so I'm delighted to get it across the line. Libor has an unbelievable scoring record in the Europa League, incredible really.

"He wasn't given much opportunity for Lazio in Serie A but he showed proper potential in leading the line there at a strong club with a great tradition and we need somebody like him as we only have Christian Benteke really as a main target man. He'll take that burden off Christian and he'll add greatly to what we've got."

RUMOUR! BBC Sport are reporting that West Ham United are confident of beating Arsenal to the signing of Chelsea striker Demba Ba. The Hammers are keen on securing a loan agreement with the Blues, but other Premier League clubs are said to also be interested in the forward.

RUMOUR! According to the Daily Mail, Hull City are interested in signing Carlton Cole, who is a free agent following his release from West Ham United.

RUMOUR! This is a new one! Chelsea have rejected Tottenham Hotspur's offer of striker Emmanuel Adebayor for Fernando Torres, according to Sky Italy. It's clear that Torres is not a massive favourite of manager Jose Mourinho, but a possible exit appears to be off the table.

RUMOUR! Sky Sports News are reporting that West Bromwich Albion's Shane Long could leave the Republic of Ireland team hotel in the next hour ahead of a move to Hull City.

Fernando appears to have dented Everton's hopes of signing him by posting on Instagram: "Porto fans can count on me..."

RUMOUR! Sunderland are believed to be targeting Tottenham Hotspur's Gylfi Sigurdsson, with Stephane Sessegnon poised to leave. According to the Daily Mail, Spurs are open to sending Sigurdsson out on loan for the season.

DONE DEAL! Chelsea have let one of their players go. No, it's not Demba Ba (not yet anyway...). The West London club have announced that defender Sam Hutchinson, who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, has joined Vitesse Arnhem for the season on a temporary basis.

DONE DEAL! Crystal Palace announce the capture of Barry Bannan from Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal.

Bannan told the club's official website: “It is a big move for me to leave Villa and I would like to thank the fans there but it's a new chapter in my life now and I can't wait to get started.

“I want to get myself in the door and start training and hopefully get myself in the team. I haven't played this season and didn't much last year so I can't wait to get going.”

There's been some developments on West Bromwich Albion's interest in Everton striker Victor Anichebe. According to BBC Sport, the Baggies could secure his signature before the 11pm deadline in a £5m deal.

Well, that's my deadline day done! I shall now hand you over to my colleague Liam Apicella, who will bring you all the latest gossip and deals as we edge closer to the 11pm deadline. Enjoy!

Evening all and thanks Danielle. Well, it's been a mad day already and things are set to hot up as the evening goes on. I'll have it all covered here until 10pm before my colleague Matt Law sees you beyond the 11pm deadline. Let's get started...

Now, I bet you thought I was going to kick off with Gareth Bale, didn't you? Well, we've known that was going to happen for ages, have't we?! No, the big talking point has been that Arsene Wenger is seemingly about to pay £42m for Mesut Ozil - yes £42m! The deal is taking its time to be completed, but it's thought to be nearing a conclusion.

RUMOUR! Well, well - our first speculation piece of the evening surrounds Shane Long. Sky Sports News says that the West Bromwich Albion striker has just left the Republic of Ireland team's hotel for talks with Hull City. That would be a very good signing for Tigers.

RUMOUR! This time from the Championship and it involves David Wheater, who is said to be wanted by his former club Middlesbrough. He left the Riverside Stadium for Bolton Wanderers in 2011. Full story here.

It's still all quiet on the Manchester United front. We've been hearing all day that deals for Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini were close, but as yet nothing has been confirmed. Following yesterday's 1-0 defeat to Liverpool, it highlighted United's need for reinforcements. However, it does sound that they are now unlikely to capture Leighton Baines from Everton.

Earlier this evening Arsenal made their first deadline day signing. It wasn't Ozil, but goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano on a season-long loan deal from Palermo. Speaking to the club's official website, here is what manager Arsene Wenger has had to say about his new recruit:

"Viviano is a player that we have rated for some time and we are very pleased to have signed him on loan. He's experienced and has proved himself at a high level, and provides us with excellent cover to our existing goalkeepers."

RUMOUR! Shane Long is a popular chap at the moment. According to the Daily Mail, Everton have joined Hull City in the race to sign the Republic of Ireland international from West Bromwich Albion.

DONE DEAL! A real coup for Swansea as they complete the loan signing of Alvaro Vazquez from Getafe. The 22-year-old played a key role as the Spanish Under-21 side won the European Championships earlier this summer. Under the terms of the agreement, the Swans have the chance to make the move a permanent one.

And here is what Swansea manager Michael Laudrup has had to say about his latest acquisition: "Vasquez is a young player I know from his time at Espanyol and now Getafe," he told the club's official website. "He is a little different to the strikers we have and has the characteristics we have been looking for. He will give us a different option."

That is expected to be the end of Swansea's business, but never say never where the transfer window is concerned!

Some good news for Liverpool fans, who must have thought earlier this summer that they had seen the last of Luis Suarez. Last season's leading goalscorer had been heavily linked with Arsenal, while Real Madrid had been linked with making a deadline day bid. However, in an interview back in his native Uruguay, Suarez has committed his immediate future to the Anfield-based club:

"I closed this subject a while ago. I have already taken the decision to stay at Liverpool," he said.

RUMOUR! Some potentially good news for Man United supporters. Reports in Spain say that Ander Herrera has agreed a five-year contract with the Premier League champions. Watch this space.

RUMOUR! It wouldn't be a proper transfer deadline day if Tottenham Hotspur didn't get involved, would it? Earlier it was claimed that they had attempted to trade Emmanuel Adebayor with Chelsea for Fernando Torres. The Blues rejected that, but they have returned to the West Londoners regarding the availability of Demba Ba, according to Sky Sports News.

Of course, if speculation is to be believed, Spurs would face competition from rivals Arsenal for Ba. Discussions between the Gunners and Chelsea are thought to have taken place, but have since stalled because the Blues want a £3m loan fee for the Senegal striker. The North Londoners battled on the pitch yesterday afternoon and tonight they may scrap off the field!

RUMOUR! A strange one and it comes from the Daily Mail. Shay Given is wanted by Liverpool, presumably to act as back-up for Simon Mignolet, who joined from Sunderland earlier this summer. Whether Given would be willing to swap Aston Villa's bench for Liverpool's remains to be seen.

Staying with the Daily Mail, Ozil's move to Arsenal has been completed according to them. No official confirmation from the Gunners, but it appears that their fans can celebrate a great signing very soon!

RUMOUR! Things are hotting up involving Demba Ba. According to Sky Sports News, Chelsea have accepted a loan bid from one Premier League club, but they are not willing to name which one! Not very handy for us, but Arsenal, Spurs, Newcastle United and West Ham United are all thought to be very interested.

DONE DEAL! One from the Championship as Yeovil add Bristol City defender Liam Fontaine on a loan basis until January. The move, which is subject to clearance from the Football League, will reunite the centre-back with Yeovil boss Gary Johnson.

There will reportedly be no more news from Cardiff City. According to the Daily Mail they are done for the day after a late bid for Wigan Athletic winger Callum McManaman failed. Malky Mackay must be happy with the squad at his disposal.

DONE DEAL! At last Peter Odemwingie gets his move away from West Bromwich Albion. It's not Queens Park Rangers like he had hoped in January, but Cardiff City before they shut up shop for the night. Here's the full story.

DONE DEAL! An exit from Chelsea, although with the greatest of respect, it's not the biggest of names. Young defender Sam Hutchinson has left Stamford Bridge on a loan basis for Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem. As always, we've got that story covered here.

Journalist Neil Ashton believes that Liam Bridcutt is not being allowed to join Crystal Palace by his current employers Brighton & Hove Albion. The Scotland international is said to be unhappy, but Brighton are standing firm.

"Looks like Liam Bridcutt's dream to join Palace in the Premier League appears to be over. Brighton will not sell to their rivals," said Ashton.

Where's Fellaini going? Sky Sports News has just reported that the Belgian midfielder left Everton's Finch Farm training ground moments ago at some speed. Perhaps he's Manchester-bound? Let's hope there is no traffic on the M62!

It appears that Ben Foster is expecting his West Brom side to make some signings before the deadline passes. Here's his tweet:

RUMOUR! Just as Arsenal are doing with Ozil, it seems that Man United are looking to complete a deal overseas. Numerous publications are claiming that a delegation from Old Trafford are in the La Liga offices in Spain to finalise the deal for Ander Herrera. A medical may very well have been completed and it seems personal terms have been agreed. It would be a surprise if this one doesn't go through before 11pm.

Arsenal fans - are you getting worried? News of Mesut Ozil's potential arrival broke last night and while we keep hearing that it is close to completion, the deal is not yet over the line. No hiccups are anticipated, but still - tick, tock.

RUMOUR! Well, we may have just found out why Fellaini was at Everton's training ground. According to Tony Barrett from The Times, he has handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through a move to Manchester United. Whether that has been accepted or not, we don't know. It does seem a little late in the day from the Belgian, but is it too late?

And here is a Tweet from Everton. Whether this means incomings or outgoings (or both), we shall have to wait and see:

They were earlier linked with Demba Ba, but it appears that Tottenham have ruled themselves out of the running, according to Sky Sports News. Either Andre Villas-Boas is happy with Roberto Soldado, Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe, or he has another iron in the fire.

Back to Ozil and former Liverpool and England midfielder Danny Murphy has been discussing the deal over on BBC Sport. While Murphy accepts that the German is a quality player, he is not sure that Arsenal really need him.

"Firstly there is no doubting Ozil's ability. He has class and talent, is gifted and is creative. Arsenal don't struggle in that department though and for me Arsenal are lacking a bit of strength and power. Even though he is a quality player, maybe not what Arsenal are wanting," he said.

A quick snippet from Barcelona coming from The Mirror reporter Ed Maylon. Isaac Cuenca and Ibrahim Afellay were both made available for loans, but no deals have been reached. Neither had been given a squad number, but Cuenca has now taken 19 while Dutch winger Afellay has been handed the number 23.

RUMOUR! One for you Everton fans to get excited by because a report has claimed that your club is keen to sign Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku on a season-long loan. The Belgian international did well at West Bromwich Albion last season and could provide the cutting edge that the Toffees have lacked recently. Full story here.

DEAL OFF! Strong reports moments ago that Demba Ba's proposed loan switch to Arsenal has fallen through. It is thought that Chelsea are not keen to lend him to a direct rival. That does not rule out Newcastle United or West Ham United, though.

DONE DEAL! Back to La Liga and a double arrival for Spain's third team Atletico Madrid. They've secured the services of highly-rated Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld from Ajax and Saint Etienne's Josuha Guilavogui. That looks to be some decent work from Atletico coach Diego Simeone.

Back to Ba and it seems increasingly likely that he could be staying at Chelsea. Moments ago a move to Arsenal was ruled out and according to BBC Sport, West Ham are now out of the running as well. That leaves just his former club Newcastle United, who have been very quiet so far today. What happened to all of Joe Kinnear's contacts?!

RUMOUR! We return to the Championship and Nottingham Forest, who are looking to boost their attacking options with Hull City's Matty Fryatt, according to the Daily Mail. Middlesbrough were interested in the striker, but that seems to have waned over the last few hours. Is he City Ground-bound?

Those Lukaku to Everton reports are starting to gather pace. Belgian journalists on Twitter seem to think that the deal has been completed. It would also explain Chelsea's sudden reluctance to let Ba leave the club. No confirmation from Everton, though, so don't get too excited just yet all you Toffees!

More sources are starting to claim that Fellaini has handed in a transfer request. It begs the question, why has he left it so late? Money would be the obvious answer - Everton would not have to pay up his contract now if he leaves as a result of the request. Still, we are told that Everton will not allow the big Belgian to leave unless they have a suitable replacement. Meanwhile in Manchester, David Moyes must be getting impatient.

RUMOUR! Wow, where has this one come from? Spanish newspaper Marca has claimed that Manchester United have failed with a bid in the region of £32m for Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira. It seems right now that David Moyes is trying to sign any midfielder! Perhaps he's flicking through a list of midfielders on Football Manager right now!

A bit more on United and their pursuit of Ander Herrera, which appears to have stalled. Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has claimed on Twitter that United officials have left the La Liga offices without paying the 24-year-old's release clause because of "bureaucratic reasons". That doesn't mean that the deal is dead, just not happening right now. Your guess is as good as mine!

According to French football writer Matt Spiro, Paris Saint-Germain have put the brakes on Mathieu Bodmer's proposed move to Nice. While that may not seem big news, it perhaps indicates that the French champions have given up hope of tempting Chelsea into selling Juan Mata.

RUMOUR! Potentially big news for Hull, who are said by numerous publications to have agreed a club-record £5m fee with West Brom for Shane Long. However, the deal does depend upon the Baggies being able to land Stephane Sessegnon from Sunderland and Everton's Victor Anichebe. Both of those are expected to be completed soon, so Hull fans may have a reason to get excited.

Nothing from either club, but it appears that Tottenham Hotspur's Benoit Assou Ekotto has joined Queens Park Rangers:

And here is Assou Ekotto's potential new manager Harry Redknapp, who just been talking to BBC Sport. It seems that deals at Loftus Road may be close:

"There are one or two things on the go, I might make a couple of late swoops. Hopefully, we will get Tom Carroll from Tottenham. I am pretty confident, he is a proper footballer. We are looking to take a few loans, maybe three or four. They will be good players, proper players."

Right then, clubs have two hours to complete their business. Surely Arsenal will get Ozil over the line by then? And what about Man United? They've got to add someone, haven't they?!

RUMOUR! A reported late move in the Championship from the Daily Mail involving Leon Best. It is believed that Blackburn Rovers are considering a late offer from rivals Bolton Wanderers for the Republic of Ireland centre-forward. It's not known whether the talks centre around a permanent move or a loan switch.

DEAL OFF! BBC Sport believe that Arsenal have cancelled Nicklas Bendtner's proposed move to Crystal Palace. The Dane would have been deemed surplus to requirements at the Emirates Stadium had Demba Ba arrived, but the plug has been pulled by Chelsea on that one. Therefore, Bendtner is thought to be staying put.

More from Manchester United and it seems that they have no chance of signing Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira. Here's what his agent, Jorg Neubauer, has recently told Bild: "Khedira will stay at Real Madrid, as we have always said. I do not know what kind of people make up these rumours."

DONE DEAL! Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed that his club have secured the services of Manchester United youngster Nick Powell on a season-long loan deal.

"We obviously had Tom Cleverley on loan and I think United were happy with the job we did with him, so it's good news that we've got the lad," Whelan told BBC Sport.

Former England international Stan Collymore has just attempted to stir things up on Twitter. Although, this is transfer deadline day - anything can happen.

RUMOUR! Staying with Collymore's mention of Lukaku and it appears that West Brom have thrown their hat in the ring. It seemed that the Chelsea striker was heading for a season-long loan at Everton, but will the lure of a return to West Brom prove too strong? We shall see.

RUMOUR! We were told that Stoke City would not be signing anyone else today, but they could be about to let a player depart on loan. According to the Daily Mail, winger Michael Kightly is close to securing a temporary switch to Championship side Burnley. That would be a good addition to Sean Dyche's squad.

Jack Wilshere is obviously in a mischievous mood this evening. Arsenal fans stop worrying!

RUMOUR! Ian Holloway has been busy today and it appears that he is going to be working up until the deadline. Sky Sports News are reporting that Nottingham Forest midfielder Adlene Guedioura is heading for Crystal Palace for a medical and discussions over personal terms. No fee has been revealed just yet.

More from Twitter and Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy is bemused to see that West Bromwich Albion are prepared to sell Shane Long to Hull City:

"Surprised to see Shane Long might be allowed to leave WBA. Always thought he was a top player and causes all sorts of problems," he tweeted.

RUMOUR! Oh dear Everton. Romelu Lukaku looked set to join the Toffees on a loan deal from Chelsea, but Sky Sports News believes that he has now had a change of heart and is instead heading to West Bromwich Albion's training ground for talks with Steve Clarke. He scored 17 Premier League goals for the Baggies last season. Great news for West Brom, but Everton manager Roberto Martinez is bound to be gutted.

DONE DEAL! A late capture for Birmingham City manager Lee Clark, who has convinced Paul Caddis to sign on from Swindon Town. The 25-year-old has agreed a three-year deal.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has banded himself around the media this evening, for a change! He's not happy with Everton over their pursuit of James McCarthy. The businessman has claimed that the latest offer to come in from the Toffees was split over a four-year period. It's safe to say that Whelan was less than complimentary about that.

The potential return of Lukaku to West Brom has got goalkeeper Ben Foster excited: "Deadline Day is awesome! Hope big Romelu Lukaku is on his way," he's just tweeted.

One for you Birmingham fans - if you missed it earlier, you've signed Paul Caddis. To find out what manager Lee Clark has had to say about the deal, here's our story.

DONE DEAL! Staying in the Championship, Barnsley have completed the season-long loan signing of defender Peter Ramage from Premier League side Crystal Palace. The 29-year-old only signed a new deal with the Eagles in May, but they have allowed him to depart Selhurst Park.

It seems that Manchester United may be about to conclude some business. The reporters outside of their Carrington training ground base have revealed that the club's photographer and a number of MUTV staff have arrived. Surely they will soon be followed by Fellaini?

More from Dave Whelan and he has insisted that Wigan Athletic have not made a bid for Blackburn Rovers striker Jordan Rhodes: "We did not make an offer for Jordan Rhodes. We wouldn't until we sold McCarthy." It appears that selling McCarthy is not going to happen either, with Wigan and Everton some way apart in their valuation of the midfielder.

DONE DEAL! News from Manchester United, but it's not Fellaini, nor Herrera. No, not even Leighton Baines! Instead, they've allowed Portuguese winger Bebe to join Pacos de Ferreira on a loan basis.

CONFUSION! Okay, the Lukaku situation has just been muddied. It seems that the Chelsea striker, who is being tracked by West Bromwich Albion and Everton, may not even be in the country. According to Sky Sports News, he is with his international teammates in Belgium, making a loan deal difficult. With just over an hour left to go, time may run out for this one.

Right, that is as far as I take you. I'll be handing you over to my esteemed colleague Matt Law, who will be with you through to 1am. First up, he has some potentially disappointing news for Manchester United fans - Matt...

Thank you Liam. Hello and welcome. Little under one hour until the window slams shut. Manchester United had appeared to be close to signing Herrera from Bilbao, but Spanish publication AS have reported that the deal is now off. What is going on?! Nothing from either club as it stands.

UPDATE! Arsenal are 'hopeful' that a deal for Ozil will be completed. It is understood that the German has had his medical, with the final details due to be ironed out. Sky Sports News have described the deal as complicated, but the Gunners are confident that they will sign the Real Madrid playmaker. Arsenal fans, stay calm.

HERRERA DEAL IS OFF! Spanish reporter Guillem Balague has just told Sky Sports News that the deal for Herrera is off. It is understood that 'imposters' might have passed themselves off as representatives from Manchester United. This is incredible news. So United supporters - that deal is off. More bad news for the Premier League champions.

Manchester United supporters - what do you think about the latest news coming out of the club? There should be some good news with Fellaini arriving, but is that enough? To put it plainly, United have fallen behind their rivals in this transfer window. It has been handled very badly there is no question about that. Just around 50 minutes for the Premier League side to sign Fellaini. Will it be completed?

DONE DEAL! Some news for Atletico Madrid supporters out there. Toby Alderweireld has completed his move from Ajax to Diego Simeone's side on a four-year deal. That is a very astute signing for the club. Meanwhile, there is some good news for Sunderland supporters on the way.

DONE DEAL! Sunderland have indeed taken Liverpool striker Fabio Borini on loan for the rest of the season. The Italian will certainly provide another forward option for the Black Cats. Another striker that could be moving on loan is Lukaku, but as of yet, there has been no confirmation. Teams need to hurry up with the window drawing to a close at 11pm this evening.

RUMOUR! Andrea Dossena is reportedly close to joining Sunderland on loan from Napoli. According to Sky Sports News, the deal is as good as done, but there has been no official confirmation. Well, I think it would be fair to say that it has been a busy summer for Paolo di Canio. If it all goes wrong, he could be the first manager to go there is no question about that.

Ozil? Any sign of that deal? Everyone seems to think that the deal will go through, but as of yet, nothing has happened. The likes of Manchester City and Chelsea are sitting back and watching this unfold, while Arsenal and Manchester United scramble around. Why has it been left so late? Both clubs have some questions to answer.

RUMOUR! Norwich are reportedly still in the race to sign Ricardo Vaz Te on a loan deal from West Ham United. Good grief this last 35 minutes is going to be a bit of a rush. That would leave the Hammers desperately short in attack!

OZIL CONFIRMS HE HAS JOINED ARSENAL! We have had no official confirmation from the club, but the German international has told a German TV channel that he has agreed to join the Gunners. We await the official word. What a signing that is for Arsene Wenger. Over to Manchester United - what on earth is happening at Old Trafford?

DONE DEAL! Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has now confirmed that a deal has been reached to sign Ozil from Real Madrid. Gunners fans - it has now been completed. Quick word from Ozil: "I'm looking forward for my future in the PL with Arsenal." What an incredible statement of intent from the London outfit.

Here's a word from former England striker Gary Lineker on Twitter: "Reliably informed that David Moyes was not interested in Ozil. Aside from the failed Fabregas bid, his only targets were Everton duo." What do United fans think about that? Fellaini and Baines are both good players, but Arsenal have just signed Ozil. Little under 30 minutes of the window remaining. Still no news on the Fellaini to United deal.

DONE DEAL! West Bromwich Albion have signed Stephane Sessegnon from Sunderland for a fee believed to be in the region of £6m, which is indeed a club record. Still no news on the possible arrival of Lukaku, but it is understood that the Baggies are going head-to-head with Everton for the Belgian's signature. Not long remaining for managers to get these deals done.

DONE DEAL! Bit of lower league news to bring you with MK Dons completing the signing of Danny Green from Charlton Athletic on a loan deal. Marseille have also been busy in the last couple of moments with the French outfit signing Florian Thauvin from Lille on a five-year contract.

RUMOUR! Crystal Palace are reportedly keen on signing Andy Johnson from Queens Park Rangers. Meanwhile, Stoke City striker Cameron Jerome has also been mentioned. Away from Palace, one for Everton fans - Gareth Barry has arrived at the club's training ground. That would be some signing for the Toffees. Little under 20 minutes for clubs to get the deals done.

Adlene Guedioura has arrived at Crystal Palace's training ground ahead of a possible move from Nottingham Forest. It has been a busy couple of days for the newly-promoted side. According to Sky Sports News Shane Long has been spotted at Hull's training ground ahead of a reported move from West Bromwich Albion. As expected, it promises to be a busy last 20 minutes or so as this window draws to a close. Fellaini anyone?!

Liverpool supporters - business has now closed. The likes of Moses and Sakho have arrived in recent days, but that is it as far as the Reds are concerned. That of course means that Luis Suarez definitely stays at Anfield. It has been a very successful window for Brendan Rodgers there is no question about that. Arsenal fans... we have a statement from your new signing coming up shortly.

"Dear fans of Real Madrid. Thank you very much for three wonderful years with all of you. My time at Real Madrid was unique and special for me," said Ozil on his official Facebook account.

"Sometimes things develop differently, than I would have expected them to a few days ago. Although I'm leaving Real Madrid, I wish you and the team the very best for the future. Now, I'm looking forward to my new club: THE GUNNERS!"

RUMOUR! Juan Mata has been linked with a move away from Chelsea in the last couple of weeks, but it appears that the Spaniard will be remaining at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain both reportedly made bids, but the Blues were not prepared to do business. Staying with Chelsea - Lukaku seems destined to leave on loan, with Everton and West Brom in the running. Little over 10 minutes of the window remaining.

According to Sky Sports News, Everton have matched Wigan Athletic's valuation for James McCarthy. Wow, late move from the Toffees. Wigan chairman Dave Whelan virtually called the deal off earlier, but it now appears that it is back on. What about Fellaini?! There has been no news since around an hour ago. Barry and McCarthy possibly arriving for Roberto Martinez - two very good signings.

It is understood that Manchester United's move for Herrera fell through because the Premier League champions were not prepared to pay his release clause. What an incredible situation. How have the champions of England let it come to this? They are five minutes away from missing out in the window. The biggest news of the day remains Arsenal's signing of Ozil from Real Madrid.

Here's a word from Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere on Twitter, who appears quite pleased with the signing of Ozil: "Signing of the summer! Easily! Fantastic player, plays the 'Arsenal way'. Welcome @MesutOzil1088 absolutely buzzing!" I suspect the club's supporters will be keen to see those two together.

Everton have had a £13m bid accepted for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy. That deal will surely go through. Still no word on Fellaini. Well, the window closes at 11pm, but nothing has happened. Terrible, terrible window for the Premier League champions.

DONE DEALS! QPR have signed Tom Carroll and Benoit Assou Ekoto - both on loan from Tottenham Hotspur. The window is now closed. But is it? Expect a number of deals to go through in the next hour or so.

McCarthy has arrived at the Everton training ground ahead of his reported move from Wigan. Well, that was quick wasn't it? That is very good business for both clubs. Without sounding like a broken record, there has been nothing on Fellaini for some time now. Is it on is it off? Who knows!

RUMOUR! Manchester United reportedly failed in a late move to sign Fabio Coentrao on loan from Real Madrid. What an incredible turn of events. I have never seen United fail with so many bids in one summer. There could still be good news if the Felliani paperwork had been filed. Be sure to remain with us as news trickles through from all angles.

DONE DEALS! Couple of Championship stories have just filtered through with Charlton Athletic taking Cameron Stewart on loan from Hull City. Meanwhile, Middlesbrough have sealed a deal for Sierra Leone international Kei Kamara, who spent the second part of last season on loan at Norwich City.

RUMOUR! Various reports on Twitter have suggested that Fellaini has indeed joined United, but that has not been confirmed by either club. For that deal to have gone through, confirmation would have needed to be filed before the deadline. Whether or not that took place is still a mystery.

DONE DEAL! Fulham have been busy in the last couple of moments with Elsad Zverotic joining the Premier League club from BSC Young Boys on a two-year contract. Where did that one come from?! He will provide cover in the middle of the park. I expect a number of signings to continue to filter through into the early hours.

DONE DEAL! Nathan Tyson has joined Blackpool from Derby County on a permanent contract. It is certainly a surprise that no offers came in for Tom Ince on deadline day. Well, no public offers anyway. The England youth international will remain at Bloomfield Road until at least January.

DEAL OFF! Shane Long will not join Hull from West Brom. That deal is off. Still no official confirmation about Victor Anichebe, who has been linked with the Baggies. Lukaku? Still no word on the Belgian striker.

DONE DEAL! Manchester United have signed Fellaini from Everton for a figure believed to be in the region of £27.5m. Wow, that is a lot. But needs must for the Premier League champions. Could you imagine the uproar if they had not signed anyone? Some more news filtering through about Coentrao. He might have joined United on loan?

DONE DEAL! Lukaku has joined Everton on loan. What a signing that is for the Toffees! They have also signed Barry and are believed to be close to signing McCarthy. A big announcement is expected to come from United in the next few moments.

RUMOUR! It now appears that United might have signed Coentrao on loan? Where did that one come from?! And where will he play?! A loan deal, how extraordinary. Confirmation is expected in the next 10 minutes or so. Plenty still to come, be sure to remain with us until 1am.

Hello? Manchester United? Anyone there please? Still no official word on Coentrao, but the deal for Fellaini has been completed. It has all gone a little bit quiet in the last few moments, but Niall Quinn in the Sky Sports News studio seems exited about the incomings.

Of course, more good news for Everton is that Leighton Baines remains with the club. It is not yet clear whether Manchester United made a late move for the England defender, but he will remain at Goodison Park. We are still waiting for news from West Brom about the possible signing of Anichebe.

The confusion surrounding Coentrao continues with reports suggesting that the paperwork was not faxed in time for the player to complete his loan move. You cannot make it up. It never rains but it pours for United. Not too much else is filtering through at the moment, but more is expected before business truly ends for the evening. For the moment, all we can do is wait.

Here's Michael Owen's view on the transfer window. The former Manchester United and Liverpool striker tweeted: "So, the window is closed. Some interesting deals done. Arsenal fans will be buzzing and Everton have recruited well. Off to bed." It has certainly been a good evening for those two sides. Liverpool have also had a very good summer in terms of transfer business.

Manchester United must have 'signed' about 50 players this summer, but for one reason or another, they have fallen through. It has not been their finest hour there is no question about that. However, Fellaini has signed, which is good news for the Premier League champions. A late loan move for Cristiano Ronaldo would certainly alter some frowns around Old Trafford this evening.

Manchester United missed out Herrera this evening because they did not want to pay his release clause, according to Sky Sports News. However, it is understood that they will return in January. We should know more on the Coentrao move in the next 15 minutes or so. Fellaini, however, has made the move. Still very much up in the air!

The biggest deal of the day remains Arsenal's move for Ozil, which is believed to have cost the Gunners in the region of £42.5m. Who thought that Arsene Wenger would spend that amount of money on one player? Finally the Frenchman has bitten the bullet and paid top price for a top player.

Staying with United for a moment, Gary Lineker has made a very valid point on Twitter. The former England international tweeted just moments ago: "Those having a pop at Moyes should remember that he won the fight to keep Rooney, which was crucial. Without him United are debilitated." For all the doom and gloom, United have kept hold of England's best player. That should stand them in good stead for the rest of the season.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp has been speaking to Sky Sports News about Tom Carroll, who he has signed on loan from Tottenham Hotspur: "He could play for England," said Redknapp. Meanwhile, Spurs defender Kyle Walker has taken to twitter to wish his teammate well for the season: "All the best @tom_carroll92 going to a great club! Start of big things."

DONE DEALS! Wow! What a window for Everton. The Premier League club have signed James McCarthy for a figure in the region of £13m. Meanwhile, Lukaku and Barry have both joined on loan. That is brilliant work from Roberto Martinez. The loss of Fellaini does not seem as bad with that trio that is for certain.

DONE DEAL! Hull City have signed striker Gedo on a season-long loan deal from Al Ahly. However, they have missed out on Shane Long from West Bromwich Albion. Good news and bad news for the newly-promoted club. It is an hour after the window and there are still deals filtering through. Incredible.

DONE DEAL! Everton's official twitter page has revealed that the club have sold Anichebe to West Bromwich Albion, while confirming that Fellaini has indeed been sold to Manchester United. Leighton Baines, of course, will remain at Goodison Park until at least January.

The transfer figure for Fellaini has been confirmed. Manchester United have paid £27.5m for his services, that is £4m more than the Belgian's previous buy-out clause. Poor business from United on that front. Still no word on Coentrao. Some say it is on, some say it is off. Until it is seen in black and white, it is anyone's guess.

I must admit that I am astounded that Lukaku has been allowed to leave Chelsea on loan this month. Does that mean that Torres will be given a more regular spot at Stamford Bridge this season? For me, Chelsea are still a striker short of being real challengers. It has been a quiet day for Manchester City, meanwhile, who tied up all their business very early.

DONE DEAL! Some news coming from Stoke City, who have let Ryan Shotton join Wigan Athletic on loan for the remainder of the season. It is not yet clear whether the Championship outfit have brought in any midfield cover, however, following the sale of McCarthy to Everton.

DONE DEAL! Some transfer news concerning Middlesbrough. Norwich City midfielder Jacob Butterfield has signed a three-year contract with the Championship outfit. However, Boro have missed out on David Wheater, who they were believed to be keen on signing before the end of the window.

Potentially some bad news for Manchester United. Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has just tweeted: "My colleague @Manu_Sainz says that Coentrao will STAY at Real Madrid. And if he says it, it is true then." I have a feeling that this one is going to run and run. Still no word from Manchester United, who are yet to confirm the signing of Fellaini. But that the deal has definitely taken place.

DONE DEAL! Michael Kightly has also been on the move this evening with the Stoke City winger joining Burnley on loan for the remainder of the season. The Potters also allowed Ryan Shotton to join Wigan Athletic on loan earlier this evening.

It was been a successful end to the window for Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have managed to keep Bakary Sako and Kevin Doyle at the club. The duo had been strongly linked with moves away from the League One outfit in recent weeks. I must say that I am surprised at that one. Both were believed to be targets for a number of Championship clubs.

DEAL OFF! It had been thought that Crystal Palace were confident of signing Andy Johnson from Queens Park Rangers, but that deal is now off. As it stands, all we are waiting for is confirmation of the Coentrao deal to Manchester United. Conflicting reports as it stands.

According to The Mirror, Coentrao has joined United on loan for the rest of the season. However, that is not a view shared by a number of reports in Spain. This one continues to run and run, but there has been no word from Manchester United, who have been silent thus far. Does that mean something is still happening inside Old Trafford?

DONE DEAL! Niko Kranjcar has joined QPR on a season-long loan from Dynamo Kiev. Harry likes the Croatian midfielder doesn't he?! That is some squad for the Championship. I would be astounded if they did not romp to the title this season. Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Tom Carroll also arrived from Tottenham earlier this evening.

Manchester United have not been active on their official twitter account since around two hours ago, when they confirmed that Nick Powell had departed to join Wigan Athletic on loan. They have not confirmed the signing of Fellaini, but his former club Everton did reveal that the move had been completed. All we can do now is wait for potential news on Coentrao. One hour and 35 minutes later!

Here's a word from West Ham United joint-chairman David Gold on Twitter: "The window is closed, we did our best. It didn't work out the way we hoped. Now let's prepare for Southampton and go there and get a result." The Hammers do appear desperately short in attack this season. Huge burden on the shoulders of Andy Carroll, who should be fit to return after the international break.

According to BBC Sport, Manchester United did submit the paperwork in time to sign Coentrao from Real Madrid. However, it is not yet clear whether the correct details were entered into FIFA's new transfer matching system. That had to be completed before midnight. It does not look good for the Premier League champions, but there is still hope. No word from either club.

Give or take the odd penny, Premier League clubs have spent at least £625m in this summer's transfer window. Small change! Staying with Coentrao for a moment, if that loan deal does go through, then it is believed that United have the option to purchase the Portuguese on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

For me, despite selling Fellaini, Everton have had a fantastic window. They managed to keep hold of Baines, signed McCarthy from Wigan and also managed to bring Lukaku and Barry to the club on loan. It is certainly a surprise that Lukaku was allowed to leave Chelsea, they are not exactly blessed with strikers at the moment.

Over £100m has been spent on deadline day, but the majority of that has come from the deals for Ozil and Fellaini, who joined Arsenal and Manchester United respectively. It has not been a busy day for Chelsea and Manchester City, but they already had their business tied up. That is it until January - well, it will be it when we finally find out about this Coentrao nonsense.

We started the summer talking about Rooney, Suarez and Bale. All three were expected to leave, but Manchester United and Liverpool insisted that they would not do business. Tottenham said the same, but eventually sold the Welsh winger to Real Madrid yesterday. As we bring this blog to a close, the biggest deal remains Arsenal's capture of Ozil, for a club-record £42.5m.

According to The Mirror, United's move for Coentrao is OFF after Real Madrid refused to ratify a deal for the Portuguese international. I have a feeling that this one will run and run. It had been hoped that a deal would be tied up before midnight, but it does not look good for United at this point in time.

So there we have it. Thanks for joining Sports Mole for our live coverage of deadline day in the transfer window. Arsenal finally secured a big-name signing, while Manchester United completed a move for Fellaini. Everton and West Brom were also busy in the final moments. Good morning folks!
