Roger Federer defeats German Daniel Brands 3-6 6-3 6-2 in his first match since a shock second-round defeat at Wimbledon.

Roger Federer rallied back from a set down to beat Daniel Brands 3-6 6-3 6-2 in the first round of the German Tennis Championships in his first outing since Wimbledon.

The Swiss star has dropped to number five in the ATP rankings since his second-round defeat to Sergiy Stakhovsky at SW19 last month.

His return to action was far from simple, with his German opponent breaking the former world number one and winning the first set. However, Federer moved into the second round in Hamburg.

Federer's first title came in the German city in 2002 and saw him break into the top 10 for the first time.
