Rafael Nadal says that he is "very happy" to have seen off Daniel Brands at the French Open.

Seven-time champion Rafael Nadal has admitted that he was relieved to have overcome the challenge of Daniel Brands during the opening round of the French Open this afternoon.

The Spaniard overturned a one-set deficit against Brands to record a 4-6 7-6 6-4 6-3 win in the French capital.

"He was playing unbelievable. I just tried to find my game and tried to resist his fantastic shots. He played a fantastic match and put me in a very difficult situation. I'm very happy to be through," Nadal told reporters.

The only time that Nadal has not won the tournament in the last seven years came back in 2009.
