The hosts had the better of the early possession and they were rewarded with 14 minutes on the clock when Craig Mackail-Smith smashed home a penalty following Lee Peltier's trip on Will Buckley.

The striker nearly found the net again minutes later but his poked effort on goal came back off the post.

Brighton continued to storm forward and they went close again midway through the half when Ashley Barnes scuffed his shot over the crossbar.

Leeds rarely looked threatening in attack but they got themselves level 10 minutes before the break when El-Hadji Diouf converted from the spot after Luke Varney had been bundled off the ball by Bruno Saltor.
