Roger Federer reaches quarter-finals with win over Roberto Bautista Agut

Roger Federer reaches the last eight of the US Open with a 6-4 6-3 6-2 victory over Roberto Bautista Agut.

Roger Federer has continued his quest for a sixth US Open title by beating Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4 6-3 6-2 in the fourth round.

The second seed, searching for his first success in New York since lifting the title in 2008, started in impressive fashion by claiming two early breaks of serve.

Bautista Agut saved one set point before reducing the deficit with a break of his own, but he was unable to make a further dent as Federer served out for the lead.

It was a similarly difficult start to the second set for Bautista Agut as the Spaniard gifted a break to Federer in just the third game.

Federer was forced to avoid a potential scare during a tough service game midway through the set, but the former world number one wrapped up a 2-0 advantage in style as Bautista Agut's errors reappeared.

A crucial moment went Federer's way at the beginning of the third set when the veteran fought back to save two break points in the opening game.

Bautista Agut failed to follow his rival's example as he once again saw his serve broken in the fourth game, and Federer never looked back.

The 17th seed was unable to produce a response in the closing stages of the match, allowing Federer to complete the victory with another break of serve in a contest which lasted less than two hours.
