Bath ease to victory in Bucharest

Bath run out comfortable 40-17 winners over Bucharest Wolves in Romania to get their Amlin Challenge Cup campaign off to a winning start.

Bath have opened their Amlin Challenge Cup campaign with a comfortable 40-17 win over Bucharest Wolves in Romania.

Sam Vesty kicked over two early penalties for the visitors before he missed a third to extend his side's lead.

Will Spencer powered over for Bath's first try midway through the half, with Vesty's conversion making it 13-0. The full-back was on target again with another penalty soon after as the away side looked untroubled by their opponents.

It got better for them with five minutes left in the half when Ross Batty combined well with Jack Cuthbert before going over. Vesty had no problems adding the extras to put Bath 23-0 in front.

Bucharest got their first points on the board with almost the last play of the half thanks to Florin Surugiu's try. Florin Vlaicu made the conversion as the Romanians trailed 7-23 at the break.

Vesty scored a deserved try five minutes after the restart and converted his own score to further his side's advantage.

Vlaicu then landed his first penalty of the contest on the hour to get the home side into double figures.

Bath continued their dominance and secured a bonus-point score with 10 minutes left on the clock through debutant Ollie Devoto's first try for the club.

Bucharest had some joy in the final six minutes through Cristian Munteanu's try, converted by Michael Wiringi.

A successful afternoon for Bath was completed when Kane Palma-Newport touched down following a driving maul.
