Anass Achahbar brace helps Feyenoord edge PSV

An Anass Achahbar brace gives Feyenoord a 2-1 win against PSV in their Eredivisie clash at De Kuip.

An Anass Achahbar brace earned Feyenoord a 2-1 win against PSV Eindhoven in this afternoon's Eredivisie clash at De Kuip.

The hosts were quickest out of the starting blocks as Elvis Manu's cross found Lex Immers in the box, but the midfielder fired wide from close range.

It would prove to be a scrappy first half as a series of fouls and challenges broke up play, although PSV could have been ahead at the break when Adam Maher smashed a rasping effort off the crossbar.

Feyenoord were awarded a penalty early in the second half when the referee pointed to the spot for a handball in the box by Luciano Narsingh, but the decision was then overruled for an offside in the build-up.

The hosts went on to take the lead on the hour when Rick Karsdorp's long ball forward was smashed into the corner by Achahbar.

Just after the hour, Feyenoord doubled their lead through another good strike by Achahbar, who chested down a Jean-Paul Boetius cross before lashing home a powerful volley.

PSV were able to halve the deficit just five minutes later when Memphis Depay blasted a first-time effort from long range that flew into the bottom corner.

Philip Cocu's charges were unable to find a leveller, however, as the hosts saw the game out and secured all three points to cement their hold on third place.

The defeat means that the previously-insurmountable lead that PSV held at the top of the table has been chipped down to 10 points.
