Early goal gives Bristol City win

A first-half penalty from Aaron Wilbraham gives Bristol City a 1-0 win over Bath City in a pre-season friendly.

An early penalty has given newly-promoted Championship side Bristol City a 1-0 win in a pre-season friendly against Bath City.

Dan Ball handled the ball inside his own box just over 10 minutes into the tie, allowing Aaron Wilbraham to fire the ball in from the penalty spot, beating former Bristol City keeper Steve Phillips.

Bath had a chance to get back on level terms midway through the first half when they were awarded a spot kick of their own after Aden Flint was also penalised for a handball, but Frank Fielding managed to deny Dave Pratt to keep the visitors in front.

Flint could have doubled the visitors' lead shorty after the restart as he met a cross from Luke Freeman, but his headed finish was a fraction wide.

Steve Coppell's side had the ball in the back of the net for a second time a few minutes later, but Ash Harper's header was ruled out for offside.

Liam Monelle came off the bench for the home side as they pushed for a late equaliser, but the striker's finish from 30 yards out failed to test the keeper.

Greg Cunningham tried to create a second for the visitors to put the win beyond doubt in stoppage time, but Connor Lemonheigh-Evans nodded the ball past the post.
