Breaking outfield caps records not on Wayne Rooney's mind

Wayne Rooney says that it is an "honour" to represent England, but claims that getting three points against Slovakia is more important than hitting his own personal milestone.

England skipper Wayne Rooney has insisted that the team, and not personal records, will come first when leading the national side out against Slovakia.

The Manchester United ace will earn his 116th cap in Trnava on Sunday evening, moving him ahead of David Beckham in the list of all-time capped outfield players for the Three Lions.

Rooney has already been named in the starting lineup for the opening World Cup qualifier, meaning a chance to create some history in a new era for England, but he has declared on the eve of the game that it will be business as usual.

"I think it is always important and an honour to represent your country," he told reporters. "To do it the second-most times will be great, but tomorrow is about the team, about getting three points.

"I'm sure one day in the future I will look back but for now I'm looking to the game tomorrow and nothing else, that's it. I have said many times that I am a proud person to play for England.

"I have been since the moment I got in the team, my motivation is the same as that day. I want to do well for England, it is the start of a qualifying campaign and important we get off to a good start."

Rooney has already revealed that the 2018 World Cup campaign will be his last as an England player, as he plans on retiring from the international game in two years' time.
