Robert Lewandowski scored on his first Bundesliga return to Westfalenstadion to put Bayern Munich 1-0 up against Borussia Dortmund at half time.
The Polish forward, who left Dortmund for the German champions last summer, headed in the rebound of a Thomas Muller shot on 36 minutes for his second goal against his former club this season.
Bayern's strike force had previously combined to allow Lewandowski to chip over home goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller, only for the offside flag to be raised.
Chances were otherwise few and far between in the opening 45 minutes of Der Klassiker, although Xabi Alonso went close with a 25-yard free kick which drifted just wide.
Dortmund, 10th in the table prior to kickoff and 31 points behind the league leaders, failed to pose a threat and could look to the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan or Shinji Kagawa to change the game off the bench.
