England manager Roy Hodgson has challenged Wayne Rooney to perform at this summer's World Cup finals.
The 28-year-old has failed to live up to his potential at international level since impressing at the 2004 European Championships, but the Three Lions boss believes that he can shine in Brazil.
"Wayne has taken on responsibility with Manchester United as he always does with the national team. I think this has been a great year for him," The Mirror quotes him as saying.
"He is 28 and that is a terrific age and this is the perfect opportunity for him to prove he is a very gifted footballer and a leading light in his team, which is one of the best in the world.
"At the moment, circumstances seem to be contriving towards England having a Wayne Rooney in top condition physically and mentally. Brazil is his chance to show that he is not just a great star in the Premier League, but that he is a world star."
England will take on Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in a tough Group D in Brazil.
