Atletico Madrid 'facing Brexit headache over Kieran Trippier future'

Atletico Madrid could reportedly consider the future of Kieran Trippier as a result of Brexit, which will see him become an non-EU player at the start of 2021.

Atletico Madrid could reportedly be forced into making a decision on Kieran Trippier's future at the club due to a knock-effect caused by Brexit.

The UK is expected to complete its departure from the European Union single market and customs union at the start of 2021, at which point Trippier's status would change to being a non-EU player.

There is currently no deal in place to guarantee the England international's working rights in Spain, and Mundo Deportivo reports that his Atletico future could come under threat as a result.

La Liga rules dictate that a club cannot have more than three non-EU players in a matchday squad, and Atletico currently have Renan Lodi, Santiago Arias and Felipe Monteiro taking up spots.

However, Trippier has been ahead of Arias in the right-back pecking order for Diego Simeone this season, while there are also plans in place to see whether Felipe can obtain a Portuguese passport, having spent three years with Porto.

Trippier's contract at the Wanda Metropolitano does not expire until 2022, having signed a three-year deal when he joined from Tottenham Hotspur last summer.
