Preview: Leeds United vs. Bristol City - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Monday's Championship clash between Leeds United and Bristol City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Already promoted, Leeds United will continue their fight for the Championship title on Monday, when playoff-bound Bristol City visit Elland Road.

Leeds are still aiming to beat Burnley to top spot and hit the 100-point mark, having already secured their return to the Premier League; meanwhile, City want to confirm a top-six finish.

After Leeds smashed six goals past Stoke City on Easter Monday, with Joel Piroe hitting the net four times on home turf, Sheffield United's subsequent defeat to Burnley then secured their latest return to England's top flight.

So, having cut celebrations short to deny rumours of his imminent dismissal, head coach Daniel Farke can now try to write his name into club history.

His side have already scored 89 goals in the Championship this season - only in 1927-28 have Leeds netted more in a single league campaign (98) - while two more wins would take them to 100 points for the very first time.

Given their goal difference is 14 better than Burnley's, that would also wrap up the title, so there is still plenty to play for as they prepare to meet Bristol City and then Plymouth Argyle.

Following a goalless draw in October's reverse fixture, Leeds are unbeaten in 10 games against Monday's opponents, since a 1-0 loss at Ashton Gate in 2016, so history is certainly on their side.

Indeed, Bristol City have lost eight of their last nine away games against Leeds, with their last league win at Elland Road dating back to November 1979.

City currently have the playoffs in their sights, but having been beaten 3-1 by Luton Town last time out, they are yet to book a place in the final top six.

Not only did they fail to register a single shot on target in the first half at Kenilworth Road, but they then conceded three times after the break, thereby failing to guarantee a playoff place.

Nonetheless, the Robins remain in fifth position thanks to Coventry City and Middlesbrough also slipping up, and they hold a healthy four-point cushion with just two games remaining.

Victory in West Yorkshire would therefore secure a spot in the post-season playoffs for a first time since 2008, when they eventually ended up as losing finalists to Hull City.

Though, as Liam Manning's side have won just one of their last 14 Championship away games, all the odds are stacked against them spoiling the party.

Team News

Leeds United's Joel Piroe on November 24, 2024© Imago

Leeds will again be without Joe Rothwell (calf) and Pascal Struijk (foot) due to injury, with the latter's absence meaning captain Ethan Ampadu should continue to partner Wales colleague Joe Rodon at centre-back.

Up front, Joel Piroe ended a nine-match goalless streak with his four-goal blitz of Stoke, taking him top of the Championship's Golden Boot rankings.

After handing a debut to 16-year-old Harry Gray - younger brother of Archie Gray, who left Leeds for Tottenham Hotspur last summer - Daniel Farke should again name the teenage striker on the bench.

Meanwhile, Bristol City have several absences to deal with. Left-back Cameron Pring is set to miss the final two games because of a hamstring injury sustained against Luton, while midfielder Joe Williams (quad) is also a doubt.

Already without Irish winger Mark Sykes for the rest of the season, the visitors are still waiting for Scott Twine to regain full fitness - he has played less than an hour over the past three games since recovering from an injury.

Once again, Nakhi Wells and Anis Mehmeti - on 10 and 12 league goals respectively - are set to feature up front.

Leeds United possible starting lineup:
Darlow; Bogle, Rodon, Ampadu, Firpo; Tanaka, Gruev; Gnonto, Aaronson, Solomon; Piroe

Bristol City possible starting lineup:
O'Leary; Tanner, Dickie, Vyner; Hirakawa, Bird, Knight, McCrorie; Earthy, Mehmeti; Wells

We say: Leeds United 3-1 Bristol City

Since 2010, Leeds have racked up 15 wins in this head-to-head, with Bristol City winning just once - and that trend should continue on Monday.

The Robins have won just four away games all season, so halting their free-flowing hosts will prove beyond them.
