Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale did not just write his name in Champions League folklore with his wonderstrike against Liverpool at the weekend, he also helped spark a debate as to just whether it was the competition's greatest ever goal.

For many, the technique shown by the Welshman to guide the ball past a frail Loris Karius marked it down as the best to be scored, particularly as it was delivered at a pivotal moment in a match of such high stakes.

Other star names from down the years can also boast to having scored world-class goals in UEFA's flagship competition, including Bale's club boss Zinedine Zidane, who watched on in disbelief at the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium on Saturday evening.

So just where does Bale's goal rank among the best ever? Here, Sports Mole ranks the top five of all time.
