Alonso back in action after skipping FP1 with injury
Fernando Alonso returned to his Aston Martin on Friday afternoon in Hungary, having sat out the opening practice session due to a back injury sustained at Spa. The 44-year-old Spaniard, currently the oldest driver on the Formula 1 grid, underwent an MRI scan earlier in the week which revealed a muscular lesion on the left side of his back. As treatment continued on Friday morning, Aston Martin confirmed he would not take part in FP1. "A decision will then be made on Fernando's participation in FP2 and the remainder of the weekend in due course," the team said. Reserve driver Felipe Drugovich stepped in for the session, but Alonso was back behind the wheel for FP2, albeit with limited mileage and ergonomic modifications. "We changed the seat and we have some airbags that we can inflate and deflate. They're working well," Alonso told Spanish media. "Obviously, if you're a normal person you'd be out for two weeks. But I think it's manageable. I'm not in pain in the car, which is the most important thing." Aston Martin's Mike Krack said the priority was recovery, not track time. "Every lap less is good," said the trackside boss. "And since we only did a comparison between the floor and the nose in the first practice session anyway, missing it didn't make much of a difference." Looking ahead, Krack added: "We're confident it'll be fine. With our calendar, there's not much time to recover. Sometimes there's not even time to sleep because you have to go somewhere."]]>

Verstappen predicts more speculation despite 2026 clarity
Max Verstappen says speculation about his future will return next season, even as rumours of a 2026 exit from Red Bull have cooled heading into the summer break. "If you ask me these questions again next year, we'll have the same speculation again," Verstappen told reporters in Hungary, following weeks of uncertainty about his long-term plans. Although widely linked to a Mercedes switch, Verstappen has now confirmed he will stay with Red Bull for 2026. Reports suggest he remains free to leave in 2027, regardless of contractual clauses. Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko said the option to exit was unlikely to be used this season. "I don't know what considerations he had, personally and with his management," Marko told Sport1. "But from his statements, it was clear that he wanted to stay. "Even if the exit clause had been triggered, nobody knows what the situation would look like in 2026. Mercedes claims to be the class leader, but there's no evidence. With the chassis, too, we don't know who will win big. There's a lot of uncertainty. "From his perspective, it makes much more sense to stay, take a look, and, if we're not competitive next year, for him to reconsider his decision." Sky Deutschland pundit Ralf Schumacher agreed Verstappen had chosen wisely. "The 2026 season will definitely be exciting with the new cars and who will succeed in designing a good car. That will, of course, open the door to speculation again – including for Max Verstappen. "But maybe Red Bull will also succeed in building a good car, and then the speculation will subside. But I believe Toto Wolff won't give up. If a team can have the best driver in the world – and that's Verstappen at the moment – then they have to try." Verstappen’s focus has now returned to Red Bull’s fading 2025 title hopes as McLaren continues to dominate. "They're flying," he said in Budapest. "My car drives like it's on ice." Former F1 tester Ho-Pin Tung agreed the gap is alarming. "I think Max might not have had a particularly good fast lap, but nevertheless, this gap is enormous," he told Viaplay. McLaren boss Andrea Stella credited the team's bold approach. "The pace and scope of development over the past two years is greater than I experienced at Ferrari during its heyday," he said. "We set very high goals for 2025 and developed the car very aggressively. This gave us a lead that we were able to increase over the course of the season." Marko admitted the championship is slipping away. "The sprint win in Spa shows that the potential is there. But the situation has become significantly more difficult, and it takes a lot of optimism to still believe in winning the title."]]>

Vasseur outlines plan as Elkann backs new deal
Ferrari president John Elkann has given his public backing to Frederic Vasseur, following confirmation that the Frenchman will remain team boss on a new multi-year contract. Making a rare paddock appearance in Hungary, Elkann dismissed speculation that Vasseur might be replaced and instead highlighted the team's recent progress. "Fred has helped Ferrari make progress in recent years," he told Sky Italia. "We finished second in the team standings last year and were close to winning the world championship title. This year, we are also second. "It's important to empower someone when they're making progress. The value of working with Fred lies precisely in the desire to keep going and constantly improve. That's the right attitude." Elkann added: "When you have a momentum of improvement, it's very important not only to provide stability but also the confidence to be able to do more." Vasseur, speaking publicly for the first time since the announcement, said: "In F1, there's no magic - it's all in the details. At the start of the season, we had to make some concessions and lost our development pace. But now we're back on the right track." He continued: "Building a team takes time and patience. It takes two or three years to have the right people, and then one or two to get results. There are no shortcuts. "We're building the foundations well and will soon announce new additions." Meanwhile, former Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto, now leading Audi's F1 project, contrasted Ferrari's culture with his new environment. "Everything is a little more spontaneous at Ferrari," he told Sport Bild. "In Switzerland, a detailed concept is developed for every idea, which is strictly adhered to. I like that." As for Elkann, he concluded: "At Ferrari, it's not the individual who is decisive, but the sum of many who, in their own way, are all extraordinary. Only when we are able to work well together, be coordinated and cohesive, can we achieve great things."]]>

Albon warns 2026 cars will reward brains over raw speed
Alex Albon says Formula 1's next-generation regulations will demand more mental agility than driving flair, after testing a 2026-spec simulator car with Williams. "Technologically speaking, the driver involvement is extremely high," said the 29-year-old. "The driver has a lot to do. As far as we're concerned, I wasn't shocked by the car and its performance. I was more focused on understanding how the power unit works and how to get the most out of it." The 2026 rules will introduce smaller hybrid engines, active aerodynamics, and more complex energy management systems - raising concerns about a loss of driving purity and an increase in so-called 'clipping'. "You have to learn a different driving style," Albon admitted. "I don't think it will come down purely to the drivers' talent in the corners. A driver who is intelligent enough will be able to understand the system, and even abuse it, decode how it works to become more efficient." He acknowledged some of the early criticisms: "There is a bit of clipping or that kind of thing. But next year the package will be a bit more complete in terms of how to get the most out of it. It won't become like Formula E, with big lift-and-coast phases and so on." As for adaptation, he said: "It's part of the regulations and it's a technology like any other in the end. I think the drivers who will do best are those who will really know how to adapt. We will have to have a very open mind about how to drive these cars." Despite hopes that the 2026 rules might reshuffle the grid, Albon remained realistic: "I don't think much will change. I don't think the speed of the cars or the way they are driven will change that much." Asked about the racing spectacle, he concluded: "Honestly, I can't say. I don't think so. I just want good battles, I guess that's what we all want."]]>

Tsunoda fights to keep Red Bull seat as Hadjar pressure grows
Aug.1 (GMM)  As Red Bull firm up plans around Max Verstappen for 2026, attention is shifting to who will partner the four-time world champion in the next regulation cycle. Yuki Tsunoda, promoted to the senior team this year after Liam Lawson’s short-lived stint alongside Verstappen, admits the results haven’t been strong. But the Japanese driver insists his progress is evident inside the garage. "Without the points, it's not ideal, but what definitely helps is that the engineers and garage on my side know that the progress is clear and the pace is clear," he said in Budapest. He rejected direct comparisons to Verstappen. "He squeezes out performance every round," Tsunoda said. "I don't want to compare myself directly to him, because he's been driving this car for nine years and I've only just gotten into it." Tsunoda also suggested he hasn't had equipment parity for most of the season. "Let's wait until I get the same car. Until then, we can't be directly compared," he said. Still, he welcomed the upgraded floor introduced on his side at Spa. "I had positive impressions in qualifying and afterwards about the improved floor. The race didn't go to plan, but the pace gave me confidence." If Red Bull opt for change in 2026, Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar is viewed as the leading alternative. The 20-year-old has impressed in his first full season and remains a favourite of Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko. "My season in Formula 2 with Hitech was terrible – at the time I thought I'd never make it to F1," Hadjar said. "But Helmut supported me and gave me a second chance." Known for being self-critical, Hadjar says he’s learning to manage his mindset. "A lot of people around me have told me to be a little more positive, because mechanics and engineers also need the optimism of the driver."]]>
