Sergio Perez has emerged as a serious contender for an Alpine seat, as doubts continue to mount over the future of Franco Colapinto.
The 22-year-old Argentine joined Alpine from Williams in a heavily promoted and expensive loan deal orchestrated by team advisor Flavio Briatore.
But after a string of underwhelming performances, speculation is intensifying that Alpine may look to make a change for 2026 — or sooner. "Briatore continues to view Colapinto critically," said journalist Ralf Bach on f1-insider’s YouTube channel.
"And anyone who knows Briatore knows he already has different ideas about the future." According to Bach, multiple alternatives are already being explored.
"I don't think it's a secret Briatore has spoken with Bottas," he said. "But I also believe Perez shouldn't be underestimated. He brings experience — and millions again thanks to Carlos Slim, who wants to bring him back to Formula 1."
Perez was let go by Red Bull at the end of 2024, but neither of his replacements — Liam Lawson nor Yuki Tsunoda — have made a convincing case since.
While Perez had long been linked with Cadillac, reports now suggest Valtteri Bottas has landed that drive, freeing Perez for a potential Alpine return.
"Briatore definitely sees a win-win situation if he gets Perez," Bach added. "And I wouldn't rule out that happening." Former driver and pundit Martin Brundle also cast doubt on Colapinto’s long-term position.
"There's definite uncertainty beyond 2025," Brundle said, with Briatore also believed to be keeping a close eye on Paul Aron as a possible future option.
