Jean Alesi has joined the growing number of F1 figures questioning Lewis Hamilton’s attitude, following a string of self-critical remarks by the Ferrari driver in Hungary.
After a poor qualifying at the Hungaroring, Hamilton stunned observers by calling himself "useless" and even suggesting Ferrari “get another driver”. Now 61, Alesi says such comments risk undermining morale.
“In my opinion, Hamilton's attitude is demoralising to those working around him,” said the former Ferrari driver. “Senna or Schumacher would never say that.”
He joins the likes of Ralf Schumacher and Bernie Ecclestone in suggesting the 40-year-old may be nearing the end of his F1 journey. However, Hamilton still has his defenders, including former team boss Toto Wolff, who told La Gazzetta dello Sport that the Briton's introspective reaction is a mark of greatness.
“When he goes through difficult times, he takes responsibility,” said Wolff. “It's a characteristic of the greats: if they know they haven't been up to par, they don't blame the team but look within. Once this moment has passed, he'll come back with the same motivation as always.”
Wolff also praised Ferrari’s recent decision to extend Fred Vasseur’s contract. “Any other choice would have been truly stupid,” he said. “I've known Fred since we were in our early twenties, and I know his value as a motorsports man. I know his entrepreneurial vision and his strength.
“Having someone like him on your team is a blessing, and you have to remember how much time it takes, in F1, to create a successful project.”
