Preview: Fleetwood Town vs. Cambridge United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's League One clash between Fleetwood Town and Cambridge United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Fleetwood Town are seeking to extend their unbeaten run of three games in all competitions when they welcome Cambridge United to Highbury Stadium this weekend.

The visitors, meanwhile, are looking to build on the goalless draw they shared with title-chasing Plymouth Argyle last time out.

Match preview

Fleetwood Town ended a run of four consecutive league games without a win by defeating MK Dons away from home last weekend.

Daniel Batty celebrated his birthday in style as he fired Fleetwood to a memorable late 2-1 comeback win, giving the Cod Army their first triumph on the road since October.

That result leaves Fleetwood currently sitting in 15th place in the table and securing another positive result here could see Scott Brown's side move into the top half of the division.

The Fishermen suffered a defeat in their last league outing at Highbury Stadium against Bolton Wanderers, however prior to that loss, Fleetwood went three games unbeaten at home, drawing with Forest Green Rovers and beating Accrington Stanley in the league, before defeating Oxford City in the FA Cup.

Brown will be eager to see his team get back on track here against a Cambridge United side that are on a four-game winless run in all competitions.

Cambridge have now gone six home league games without a goal after their 0-0 draw with high-flying Plymouth Argyle last time out.

The U's arguably had the best chances in a frantic encounter, but a combination of poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping from Argyle's Michael Cooper meant the match finished goalless.

However, Mark Bonner will be encouraged by his side's bright performance against Plymouth, and he will be hoping that the Amber Army can bring a similar level of intensity into the clash against Fleetwood on Saturday.

Bonner's men are in desperate need of points, as they currently sit 20th in League One, just one point above the relegation zone.

The U's have not travelled well this season – they have only won twice on the road so far and the last time they secured points away from home was in a 3-2 victory against Wycombe Wanderers back in October.

Team News

Josh Earl will return to proceedings for the hosts after being suspended for the clash against MK Dons, while Daniel Batty could be rewarded with a start here after his impact from the bench last time out.

Joe Garner looks likely to lead the line for Fleetwood, as he has started up front in the past two games.

Meanwhile, Mark Bonner named three changes to the side that lost to Forest Green for the clash against Plymouth as Zeno Ibsen Rossi, Jack Lankester and Sam Smith came into the team to replace Jubril Okedina, Shilow Tracey and Joe Ironside, so Bonner could shuffle the pack again here.

Will Mannion will retain his place between the sticks as Dimitar Mitov continues to recover from ankle ligament damage.

Cambridge also remain without midfielder Adam May for the trip to Fleetwood on Saturday, as he is sidelined with a long-term cruciate ligament injury.

Fleetwood Town possible starting lineup:
Lynch; Nsiala, Holgate, Earl; Rooney, Batty, Vela, Warrington, Morton; Gomes, Garner

Cambridge United possible starting lineup:
Mannion; Williams, Rossi, Jones, Dunk; Digby, Worman; Knibbs, Tracey, Brophy; Ironside

We say: Fleetwood Town 1-0 Cambridge United

Fleetwood are the side in better form coming into this clash, but Cambridge will be encouraged by their display last time out against Plymouth.

We think this will be a closely-fought contest, but Cambridge's away form this season makes us favour a narrow Fleetwood win.
