Preview: Groningen vs. Fortuna Sittard - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Eredivisie clash between Groningen and Fortuna Sittard, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Off the back of a first defeat in four games last time out, Groningen play host to Fortuna Sittard in round 14 of the 2022-23 Eredivisie season.

Meanwhile, the visiting team make the trip to Euroborg this weekend looking to end a run of five matches across all competitions without a victory.

Match preview

Groningen narrowly came up short in Sunday's meeting against FC Utrecht at the Stadion Galgenwaard, which ended in an agonising 2-1 defeat.

Frank Wormuth's men took the lead though Florian Kruger five minutes shy of the half-time whistle before second-half strikes from Taylor Booth and Sander van de Streek turned the game on its head.

Trots van het Noorden have dropped down to 14th place in the Eredivisie table as a result, and their buffer over the drop zone is now down to just two points.

Coming up next is a clash versus an opposing outfit whose record in this fixture is underwhelming to say the least with just one victory in the last 11 meetings between the teams.

Having ended a three-game home losing streak in their most recent outing on home turf, Sunday's hosts now seek consecutive league wins in front of their fans for the first time since March.

Fortuna Sittard suffered a first home defeat in over two months as they were beaten 1-0 by FC Emmen in the sides' encounter at the Fortuna Sittard Stadion on Saturday.

Julio Velazquez's men went behind two minutes before the hour mark to Richairo Zivkovic's opener and that was enough to decide a tight affair.

With only two points amassed from the last 12 available, the Fortunezen are 13th in the league standings, just two points clear of relegation danger.

In what is set to be their final outing of 2022, Sunday's visitors prepare for a tough assignment away from home where they have won just one of eight matches since July.

Team News

Tomas Suslov is set to miss a fifth consecutive game since coming off in the first 15 minutes of Groningen's 3-0 defeat to Twente last month.

Liam van Gelderen is also unavailable for the away side due to a muscle problem, while Paulos Abraham and Nordin Musampa continue to nurse knee problems.

Deroy Duarte made his return to the Fortuna Sittard bench last time out, but this weekend's match is expected to come too soon for the 23-year-old.

Greece international Dimitrios Siovas is a major doubt for the away side as he is yet to regain full fitness following his recent battle with a hamstring injury.

Groningen possible starting lineup:
Leeuwenburgh; Dybvik, Sverko, Te Wierik, Kasanwirjo, Dankerlui; Duarte, Pelupessy, Valente; Kruger, Pepi

Fortuna Sittard possible starting lineup:
Pandur; Cox, Guth, Navarro, Pinto; Erdogan, Ozyakup; Embalo, Seuntjens, Cordoba; Gladon

SM words green background

We say: Groningen 1-0 Fortuna Sittard

The teams have struggled of late heading into this one, and that could give rise to a tense affair. That said, we just about fancy the hosts to come away with all three points at the sound of the final whistle.
