Paul Scholes critical of Anthony Martial's performance in Champions League

Club legend Paul Scholes criticises the performance of Anthony Martial in Manchester United's Champions League defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir.

Paul Scholes has claimed that the movement of Manchester United forward Anthony Martial was "virtually non-existent" against Istanbul Basaksehir.

While Martial got on the scoresheet during Wednesday's match in Turkey, United succumbed to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to the minnows of their Champions League group.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come in for strong criticism after a poor performance, but Scholes has suggested that Martial should field some of the blame over the coming days.

Speaking to BT Sport, the club legend said: "The movement from the centre-forwards was virtually non-existent. Anthony Martial, the amount of times I looked up when a midfielder had the ball, he was just stood in between the two centre-backs doing nothing.

"I'm a big fan of Martial but the amount of times I looked up and he was walking, he has have to realise as a centre forward - every now and again you have to move if you're going to score a goal. You can't just be walking in front of two centre-backs doing nothing."

Martial's only two goals this season have come during his last two appearances.
