Unbeaten under Leonardo Jardim, Flamengo are hoping to close the gap to the top of the Brasileiro Serie A table when they visit Bragantino at the Estadio Cicero de Souza Marques on Friday.
While the Rio club look to chase leaders Palmeiras and keep their recent good form going, Massa Bruta are going through a difficult spell.
Match preview
Bragantino's start to the season has been marked by instability and frustration. Knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Campeonato Paulista and without a win in six Brasileiro matches, Massa Bruta boss Vagner Mancini has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks.
The team kicked off their campaign well, winning their first two contests - 1-0 against Coritiba on January 28 and 1-0 against Atletico Mineiro a week later - but their output has dropped sharply, and the threat of relegation now looms over them following a 2-1 beating at the hands of Botafogo on March 21.
As things stand, Bragantino sit 15th in the division, with eight points from eight games. They have suffered four defeats, scored just six goals (the worst attacking record in the competition) and conceded seventeen.
In order have any chance of pulling away from the drop zone this week, the team need to urgently rebuild their confidence, especially given that they are facing a heavyweight like Flamengo during such a tough spell.
The pressure on manager Mancini is growing with every passing match, and the chief will be desperate to end his side's five-game winless streak against the Scarlet and Black in front of the Massa Bruta faithful in order to kickstart the campaign.
The task, however, will not be simple. Flamengo come into this clash in strong form and are the superior technical side on paper, so the hosts must be defensively disciplined and show greater clinical edge when chances arise.
In contrast, state champions Flamengo arrive undefeated under Jardim and in high spirits, though they will be keen to bounce back after being held to a 1-1 draw by Corinthians last time out.
The manager's tenure has not been a long one so far, but he has recorded three wins and two draws across his five games in charge of the Scarlet and Black, who have conceded just one goal in that period and boast the best defensive record in the Brasileiro, letting in only five overall.
Flamengo sit sixth in the league with 14 points from seven games - four wins, two draws, and just one defeat. Powering that strong start has been an impressive attacking efficiency and a balanced team that have already scored 13 goals, enough to make them a threat to any opponent.
Adding to the visitors' confidence ahead of Friday's showdown is the fact that Jardim's men have won four and drawn one of their last five games against Bragantino - a run that goes back to a 4-0 defeat in June 2023 - a clear show of dominance in a fixture that had previously been particularly competitive.
However, Bragantino will be hungry for points this week, and considering that the Scarlet and Black only marginally lead the head-to-head record against their hosts (nine wins to seven), Flamengo will be banking on their defensive solidity and individual quality to control proceedings.
With a combination of good form, stability in the manager's seat, and a favourable recent record against their opponents, Flamengo go into this fixture as heavy favourites. The Rio side are not only chasing three points, but also looking to cement a positive start to the league season and keep themselves firmly in contention at the top end of the table.

Team News
Bragantino go into Thursday's clash with a significant number of injury absentees, but no suspensions. Goalkeeper Fabricio, full-backs Agustin Sant'Anna and Vanderlan, centre-back Guzman Rodriguez, and forwards Fernando and Davi Gomes are all out.
In their absence, Mancini will be forced to reshape his side, especially at either end of the pitch, while trying to maintain cohesion against a tough opponent.
On Friday, Gustavo Marques and Alix Vinicius should feature in the hosts' backline, while Rodriguinho looks set to keep his place in the starting XI, with Gustavo Neves dropping out. The expectation is that Massa Bruta will rely on their home advantage and collective intensity to make the contest an even affair, despite being limited by their injury list.
As for Flamengo, they are also missing a number of key players, including former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea midfielder Saul Niguez and full-back Alex Sandro due to injury, not to mention Evertton Araujo, who is serving a suspension following his red card against Corinthians.
On a more positive note, Leo Pereira and Erick Pulgar have returned from their own suspensions and will be available to Jardim. This could be crucial given that many of the visitors' first-choice squad featured heavily during the international break, and the boss is expected to rest some players as a result.
With that in mind, Emerson Royal, Lucas Paqueta, and Vitao could all come into the starting lineup, as the team looks to rely on experience and defensive solidity to control the game and claim a vital three points away from home.
Bragantino possible starting lineup:
Cleiton; Hurtado, Marques, Vinicius, Capixaba; Gabriel, Fernandes; Barbosa, Rodriguinho, Mosquera; Sasha
Flamengo possible starting lineup:
Rossi; Royal, Ortiz, Vitao, Lucas; Pulgar, Jorginho; Araujo, Paqueta, Lino; Pedro
We say: Bragantino 1-2 Flamengo
Bragantino will need to harness the support of their fans to hold their own against a well-equipped Flamengo side that have been strong away from home of late, losing just one of their last seven on the road.
Even with their limitations, Bragantino will look to create chances and capitalise on any mistakes from their opponents, making the most of the home advantage in search of a positive result that would lift them away from the relegation zone and restore confidence.
As for Flamengo, Jardim is expected to opt for resting part of his main squad. The Scarlet and Black are counting on their defensive solidity to dictate the game, aiming to set the tempo and exploit attacking opportunities to secure victory on the road.
