Preview: Wycombe Wanderers vs. Oxford United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Wycombe Wanderers and Oxford United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two sides looking to make a push for the playoff places will go head-to-head on Tuesday when Wycombe Wanderers welcome Oxford United to Adams Park.

The hosts, who are in eighth position in the League One table, are currently five points adrift of the top six, while Oxford are three points further back in 10th place.

Wycombe have had plenty of time to prepare for Tuesday's contest after Saturday's away meeting with Bristol Rovers was postponed.

In their most recent outing, Wycombe were beaten 1-0 by Sheffield Wednesday, ending a five-game unbeaten home league run.

They also recorded three consecutive home victories in League One prior to the defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, and they will be determined to embark on a similar spell of form, beginning with their midweek game against Oxford.

Although they remained in eighth position following Saturday's action, the distance between them and the top six increased from two to five points after sixth-placed Barnsley beat Accrington Stanley.

In their last four meetings with Oxford, the Chairboys have recorded three wins and one draw - including a 1-0 win earlier in the season - which will inspire confidence ahead of Tuesday's encounter.

Oxford are looking to secure three consecutive league victories for the first time this season after winning by a 2-1 scoreline in their last two matches.

The U's followed an away win over Fleetwood Town, with a statement victory against a promotion-chasing Ipswich Town side on Saturday.

Yannick Wildschut saw his first-half opener cancelled out within four minutes by Leif Davis, but Oxford still managed to claim all three points thanks to Cameron Brannagan's 83rd-minute winner.

Oxford have now won three of their last four league games, and they will need to continue that positive run of form if they are to close the eight-point gap to the playoffs.

While the visitors will be keen to claim another victory on Tuesday, they will certainly believe that they can pick up at least a point after losing just one of their previous nine away matches in League One.

Team News

Following a spell on the sidelines, Tjay De Barr and Dominic Gape are all in contention to return to the Wycombe squad, although the trio may have to settle for places on the bench.

Alfie Mawson is also set to return from injury, and he could be brought into the backline to feature alongside Ryan Tafazolli in the centre of defence.

After dropping out of the side for the defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, Sam Vokes may return to the starting lineup to lead the line for the hosts.

As for the visitors, they will be unable to call upon the services of Marcus Browne, James Henry, Alex Gorrin and Sam Baldock due to injury issues.

Oxford changed shape to a back three on Saturday, allowing Hull City loanee Brandon Fleming to make his first start for the club, and he is likely to feature a left wing-back again, with Robinson set to use the same formation.

After missing the majority of the season through injury, Wildschut opened his account for the campaign on Saturday, and he will have the chance to add to his tally when he starts against Wycombe on Tuesday.

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Stryjek; Grimmer, Tafazolli, Mawson, Obita; Wing, Scowen; Mehmeti, Wheeler, McCleary; Vokes

Oxford United possible starting lineup:
Eastwood; Long, Moore, Brown; Anderson, Bate, McGuane, Brannagan, Fleming; Wildschut, Bodin

We say: Wycombe Wanderers 1-1 Oxford United

With the two sides only separated by three points, we think that they will be closely matched, which we believe could result in the spoils being shared.
