Most successful football clubs of all time: The most decorated clubs in history ranked

Football is the most widely followed sport on the planet, captivating billions with its intensity, emotion and unpredictability, but ultimately it is a sport judged by achievement.

Transfers, tactical debates and elite talent may dominate discussion, yet trophies remain the clearest measure of greatness, defining eras, uniting supporters and cementing enduring legacies.

From domestic powerhouses to sides that have ruled the European stage, the pursuit of honours has produced many of the game’s most memorable chapters.

Although football continues to change in the modern era, success is still the standard by which all clubs are measured, and with that in mind, Sports Mole takes a look at the 10 most successful clubs in history.

10. Porto (Portugal)

Several periods of dominance in Portugal have made Porto one of the most successful football clubs on the planet, including 30 Portuguese league titles and 20 Portuguese Cup trophies.

The Dragons may yet swell that tally in 2025-26. They remain top of the Primeira Liga and are still firmly in the hunt for silverware, with a place in the Europa League quarter-finals keeping their continental hopes alive.

While their Taca de Portugal journey ended at the semi-final stage, Porto’s season continues to carry promise on multiple fronts.

Porto have also enjoyed success on the European stage, most notably lifting the Champions League trophy on two occasions - in 1986-87 and 2003-04.

Their impressive trophy haul ranks them as the 10th most successful football club of all time, with a staggering 82 trophies.

9. Benfica (Portugal)

Benfica sit just above their Portuguese rivals in the honours list, having amassed 83 major trophies across their history, including a record 38 league titles and 26 Portuguese Cups.

The Eagles also hold the benchmark in the Taca da Liga, lifting the trophy eight times, underlining their enduring authority in Portuguese football.

Benfica’s success has extended beyond domestic borders as well, having claimed the Champions League in consecutive seasons, winning Europe’s premier prize in 1960-61 and 1961-62.

8. Bayern Munich (Germany)

Bayern Munich's unmatched dominance in Germany has significantly helped them in becoming one of the world's most successful football clubs, boasting a record 35 Bundesliga titles and 20 German Cups.

Bayern have also enjoyed plenty of European success, including winning the Champions League on six different occasions, lifting the iconic trophy in 1973-74, 1974-75, 1975-76, 2000-01, 2012-13 and 2019-20.

Alongside other trophies, from Club World Cups to German Super Cups, Bayern Munich have lifted a total of 86 trophies throughout their history.

7. Barcelona (Spain)

Barcelona have long shared domestic dominance with Real Madrid, but the Catalan side have reigned supreme over their rivals in recent times.

The Blaugrana have emerged victorious in each of the last three finals contested between the two clubs, including Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup meetings across successive seasons, with the latest success arriving in January 2026.

That recent edge has also been reflected in the league, as Barcelona finished above Madrid in the 2024–25 La Liga campaign to secure a 28th top-flight title, while further domestic honours have taken their overall haul to a record 32 Spanish Cups and 16 Supercopa de Espana triumphs.

Beyond Spain, Barcelona have enjoyed sustained success on the European and global stage, with five Champions League crowns, three FIFA Club World Cup titles and further honours contributing to a total of 95 trophies across the club's history.

6. Real Madrid (Spain)

Real Madrid finish narrowly above their Spanish rivals with 103 trophies in total, largely thanks to their record 36 La Liga titles and unmatched European success.

4. Nacional (Uruguay)

Nacional are narrowly above their fellow Uruguayan opposition with 111 trophies in their 126-year history.

Those trophy victories take Celtic to a marvellous 120 trophies throughout their prestigious history.
