Wayne Rooney hails "fantastic" Marcus Rashford

England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney backs the "fantastic" Marcus Rashford to become a regular at international level.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has insisted that Marcus Rashford has what it takes to become a regular for England.

The 18-year-old was left out of Sam Allardyce's first and last England squad, but has since earned a recall under Gareth Southgate having scored a hat-trick for the Under-21 side.

Rooney captains the youngster at club and international level, and he is adamant that the striker is a future England starter in the making.

"I hope so. He is a fantastic player with a great attitude and has got all of the ability. I don't see any reason why he can't become a regular and I am sure if given chance in these next two games he will start to do it," he told reporters.

England will take on Malta at home and Slovenia away in Southgate's first two matches as manager.
