Preview: Cambridge United vs. Wigan Athletic - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Monday's League One clash between Cambridge United and Wigan Athletic, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Cambridge United will attempt to claim a second straight victory when they play host to Wigan Athletic in Monday's League One encounter.

The visitors, meanwhile, will be hoping to make it three games without a defeat after picking up four points from their last two matches.

After beginning his tenure with one drawn and two defeats, Garry Monk finally claimed his first victory as Cambridge boss in Friday's away meeting with Barnsley.

A Mael de Gevigney own goal and a Gassan Ahadme effort proved enough to claim a 2-0 victory over the Tykes, bringing an end to Cambridge's seven-game winless run.

Not only would Monk have been pleased with the three points, but he would have been relieved to see his side claim a clean sheet after conceding 10 goals across their two games prior to Friday's fixture.

The Cambridge boss will be well aware that there is still a lot of work to do, with his side currently sitting in 19th place and three points above the drop zone.

Having taken just two points from their last five home matches, the U's will be desperate to clinch their first victory at Abbey Stadium since beating Fleetwood Town 2-1 in the middle of January.

Despite having to contend with an eight-point deduction, Wigan are sitting in the top half of the table with six matches left to play.

The Latics head into Monday's contest in reasonable form, having won two, drawn one and lost one of their previous four games.

They followed a win against Leyton Orient with a defeat to Wycombe Wanderers, before they claimed a narrow victory over Blackpool.

Shaun Maloney's side had to be content with a point from Friday's home game against Burton Albion after John Brayford netted a second-half equaliser to cancel out Wigan's opener, which came courtesy of a Sam Hughes own goal.

The 1-1 draw did at least extend their unbeaten home run to five matches, and they will be keen to carry some of that form onto their travels after losing three of their previous four away matches.

Team News

Cambridge are unable to call upon the injured quartet of Harrison Dunk, Glenn McDonnell, George Thomas and Saikou Janneh.

Goalkeeper Will Mannion will start a second straight game, with Jack Stevens set to be sidelined for three to four weeks with a hamstring problem.

Ahadme could be presented with a starting berth after coming off the bench to score the second goal in Friday's 2-0 win over Barnsley.

As for the Latics, winger Jordan Jones is expected to be sidelined for a second consecutive game after he missed the draw with Burton due to a knee problem.

Jason Kerr was also absent from Friday's matchday squad for personal reasons, but Maloney hopes to have the defender available for Monday's fixture.

Steven Sessegnon and Martial Godo are both in contention to start after coming off the bench to play the majority of the second half against the Brewers.

Cambridge United possible starting lineup:

We say: Cambridge United 2-1 Wigan Athletic

Although Cambridge are sitting seven places lower than their opponents, they would have taken confidence from Friday's victory.

With their League One status at stake, the U's may also have an extra piece of motivation to claim maximum points, and we think that they will do enough to edge out a Wigan side that has lost three of their previous four away games.
