Under-fire Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso responds to Liverpool return rumours

Xabi Alonso responds to Liverpool return rumours

Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has responded to speculations linking him to a return to Liverpool in case the Reds sack Arne Slot following a disastrous run of form.

After a strong start to the season, Madrid have struggled in recent weeks, managing only two wins in seven games across all competitions.

Los Blancos lost 2-0 against Celta Vigo in their last match, and trail Barcelona by four points in the La Liga table.

While Alonso claims that everyone at the club is working together to halt the poor run of form, in reality, he is already clinging to his job after six months.

There are suggestions that Madrid could sack Alonso if they lose against Manchester City in the league phase of the Champions League on Wednesday.

Alonso responds to Liverpool rumours

Ahead of the match, Alonso was asked whether he could consider a potential return to the Premier League, and while Liverpool wasn't directly mentioned, the implicit indications are clear.

Alonso was one of the candidates Liverpool reportedly wanted as a successor for Jurgen Klopp before they moved for Slot, and he could be considered again if the Reds part ways with the Dutchman.

At the moment, the Liverpool board has shown full faith in Slot despite poor results, but the patience could grow thin if there's no improvement in the next few games.

Alonso said, as quoted by the Daily Mail: "For sure. Of course there is a bond with my former club, but for now this is my place. In future you never know what might happen."

Will Liverpool sack Slot?

With only four wins from 15 games, Slot would have been fired a long time back, purely based on results, but Liverpool operate on a different philosophy.

The Reds want to give the manager who won the Premier League title in his first season enough time, but they cannot wait eternity to make the bold call if the progress is not evident.

Slot is under tremendous pressure, and the tension has been exacerbated after Mohamed Salah gave an explosive interview that led the club to omit him from the matchday squad against Inter Milan.
