Hamburger SV vs Augsburg - prediction, team news, lineups

Hamburger SV will be looking to get back to winning ways on Saturday when they welcome Augsburg to the Volksparkstadion.

The hosts currently sit 12th in the Bundesliga and are six points above 16th-placed St Pauli, while the visitors are only one point above Hamburg in 10th.

Match preview

Hamburg head into Saturday's clash off the back of a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund last week.

First-half goals from Philip Otele and Albert Sambi Lokonga put Hamburg 2-0 up and they looked on the verge of causing an upset before two late penalties from Ramy Bensebaini and a goal from Serhou Guirassy saw Dortmund complete a remarkable turnaround.

Manager Merlin Polzin admitted after the game that it was "extremely disappointing" to lose after conceding three goals in 11 minutes and he urged his players to "learn from these situations".

Hamburg have now won just one of their last six league games and it is worth noting that only three clubs have scored fewer goals than them this season.

Augsburg, meanwhile, have lost their last three games and they were thumped 5-2 by Stuttgart last weekend.

The defeat ended Augsburg's impressive eight-game unbeaten streak at home and manager Manuel Baum was disappointed with his side's performance, admitting they "defended badly" and "didn’t put up enough of a fight".

Baum will be hoping his side can bounce back immediately against Hamburg, but Augsburg do have one of the worst away records in the division with only two other teams picking up fewer points on the road than them.

Augsburg also have one of the worst defensive records in the Bundesliga, having conceded 50 goals in 27 games so far.

Team News

Otele is expected to continue leading the line for Hamburg alongside Ransford Konigsdorffer after his goal against Dortmund.

Fellow goalscorer Lokonga is also expected to start in midfield alongside Fabio Vieira and Nicolai Remberg.

Augsburg could make several changes after their disappointing defeat to Stuttgart, with Rodrigo Ribeiro, Noahkai Banks and Elvis Rexhbecaj likely to be axed.

The trio were all taken off at half-time last weekend and could be replaced in the starting lineup by Michael Gregoritsch, Arthur Chaves and Anton Kade.

Hamburger SV possible starting lineup:

Fernandes; Omari, Vuskovic, Torunarigha; Mikelbrencis, Vieira, Remberg, Lokonga, Muheim; Otele, Konigsdorffer

Augsburg possible starting lineup:

Dahmen; Schlotterbeck, Chaves, Zesiger; Kade, Fellhauer, Massengo, Giannoulis; Rieder, Claude-Maurice; Gregoritsch

We say: Hamburger SV 1-0 Augsburg

It is difficult to split these two sides, but Augsburg's poor defensive record and their struggles away from home means we are backing Hamburg to pick up all three points.
