Estudiantes vs. San Lorenzo - prediction, team news, lineups

It is a battle between two of the teams thriving near the top of the Argentina Primera Division on Wednesday as fourth-placed Estudiantes host third-placed San Lorenzo.

With just two points between them, there is very little to separate them heading into this one, which should make for a close encounter.

Match preview

Estudiantes have impressed so far this season, having suffered only five defeats out of their 20 Argentina Primera matches to this point, which has pushed them into fourth place.

Despite that, the team do head into this midweek match on the back of two games without a win as their 1-1 draw against Red Bull Bragantino was followed up by a defeat against Colon.

Even though Estudiantes dominated their game at the weekend in terms of possession and shots on target they were unable to find the back of the net as they suffered a 1-0 loss.

Another loss is something that Eduardo Dominguez will be wary of considering it could see his team slip down to seventh in the table.

On the flip side, three points would guarantee that they overtake their opponents, placing pressure on the top two in the process.

That is something that the visitors will be keen to avoid, especially since they head into this match on the back of three consecutive games without a defeat.

However, that run has been a difficult one for them because all of those games have finished in goalless draws, continuing San Lorenzo's issues in front of goal.

The Saints have had problems scoring goals throughout the entire season, with only one team in the top 10 having scored fewer than them at this stage.

Despite that, San Lorenzo have been brilliant defensively, conceding just seven times across their 20 league games at this point, proving how tough they are to break down.

Continuing that run on Wednesday would guarantee they can pick up at least one point, but San Lorenzo will be aiming to put some real distance between themselves and Estudiantes in the league table.

Team News

The 4-3-3 formation that Estudiantes have been displayed at the weekend is likely going to continue in this match, with this being something that has worked for them throughout this campaign.

Pablo Piatti is a player that the hosts have to deal without until at least December after suffering a cruciate ligament injury.

The visitors are also going to be missing a key player as Jeremias James is on the sidelines because of a knee problem.

Despite that San Lorenzo have plenty of options in all areas that should provide potential as they look to get back to winning ways.

Estudiantes possible starting lineup:

Andujar; Godboy, Lollo, Romero, Benedetti; Guasone, Rodriguez, Zuqui; Rollheiser, Sosa; Carrillo

San Lorenzo possible starting lineup:

Batalla; Perez, Gattoni, Campi; Giay, Sanchez, Braida, Barrios; Vombergar, Bareiro, Cerutti

We say: Estudiantes 0-1 San Lorenzo

San Lorenzo have been fantastic at the back this season, and that will likely be on display once again this time around as they push for a fourth consecutive clean sheet.

While Estudiantes have been impressive throughout this season, their recent dip in form could make this a difficult game for them.
