Preview: Chile vs. Qatar - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's International Friendlies clash between Chile and Qatar, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

On Tuesday, Qatar will face Chile in an international friendly in what will be the World Cup hosts' final game before the tournament begins in November.

While Chile failed to qualify for the World Cup, they will be looking to end a six-game winless run when the two nations go head-to-head in Vienna.

After participating in the 2010 and 2014 World Cup, Chile will miss a second straight tournament after enduring a torrid qualification campaign.

As a result of losing half of their 18 qualifying games, La Roja finished five points adrift of the playoff place and seven points off automatic qualification.

Chile would have hoped that the appointment of Eduardo Berizzo as head coach in May would have resulted in an upturn in fortunes, but the new boss has begun his tenure with three losses and a penalty shootout defeat to Ghana in the Kirin Cup, which followed a goalless draw.

In total, Chile are now winless in their last six games, while they have failed to score in all six of those contests, ensuring that confidence is at a premium within the squad.

Following a dismal run of form, La Roja will hope a meeting with a country 13 places below them in the FIFA World Rankings represents the perfect opportunity to claim a victory.

While Chile are struggling, Qatar are preparing to welcome the world's best footballing nations to their country this November.

Not only are they eagerly anticipating their first World Cup, but Qatar are also looking forward to their first-ever appearance at the biggest football tournament.

Despite their lack of World Cup experience, Qatar can draw upon recent tournament success after winning the Asian Cup in 2019 and reaching the semi-finals of the Gold Cup and Arab Cup last year.

Before they can turn their attention to football's showpiece event, Qatar will attempt to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat to Canada when they face Chile on Tuesday.

After conceding both goals against Canada within the opening 13 minutes, Felix Sanchez will remind his side of the importance of starting positively against Chile.

Team News

While experienced players like Alexis Sanchez, Arturo Vidal and Gary Medel are expected to start, Chile could make a couple of changes to their side.

Marcelino Nunez is in contention to come into the midfield, while Francisco Serralta and Gabriel Suazo may also be brought into the starting lineup.

Ben Brereton Diaz is expected to keep his place in the frontline, with the forward looking to add to the four goals that he has scored at international level.

As for the visitors, experienced goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb is expected to be shielded by a back five that will contain Abdelkarim Hassan, who has over 100 caps to his name.

After coming off the bench to feature in the final 30 minutes against Canada, Ali Assadalla could come into the starting lineup for Tuesday's friendly.

Despite failing to score in Friday's defeat, Sanchez could persist with the front pairing of Akram Afif and Almoez Ali.

Chile possible starting lineup:
Cortes; Sierralta, Medel, Huerta; Delgado, Nunez, Pulgar, Vidal, Suazo; Brereton Diaz, Sanchez

Qatar possible starting lineup:
Al Sheeb; Ro-Ro, Salman, Al-Rawi, Hassan, Ahmed; Waad, Boudiaf, Assadalla; Afif, Ali

We say: Chile 1-1 Qatar

Although Chile are ranked 13 places higher than their opponents, they head into Tuesday's friendly bereft of confidence, and we think that they will be held to a draw by Qatar.
