Wissa transfer news: Brentford star has 'no intention' of returning to training amid Newcastle interest

'No intention' claim made as Brentford wait for Wissa return

Brentford forward Yoane Wissa reportedly has no plans to take part in Thursday's training session amid transfer interest from Newcastle United.

The Bees are in the middle of a tumultuous summer, having seen a number of key players follow long-serving head coach Thomas Frank through the exit door.

Goalkeeper Mark Flekken and club captain Christian Norgaard joined Bayer Leverkusen and Arsenal respectively, before key attacker Bryan Mbeumo completed a big-money move to Manchester United.

Keith Andrews's side are now facing a real battle to retain the services of another key member of the first-team squad, with Wissa keen to join Newcastle before the transfer window shuts on September 1.

Brentford are reluctant to lose another important player and have already turned down a £25m offer from the Magpies for the 28-year-old forward.

Wissa unwilling to train with Brentford

Last week, Wissa left Brentford's training camp in Portugal due to the considerable speculation surrounding his future with the West London club.

Andrews insisted that Wissa would return to training when the first team returned to the English capital.

However, according to Sky Sports News, the striker has 'no intention' of returning to training with the rest of the squad on Thursday.

Wissa is willing to attend the training ground, but does not intend to step foot on the training pitch, having been left 'angry and disappointed' with the club's handling of his current situation.

A recent report claimed that Wissa feels that Brentford have backed out of a previous agreement, where they would sanction his departure if they received a suitable transfer offer.

Wissa is still hoping to secure a move to Newcastle, who can offer him the chance to play Champions League football next term.

The Magpies are said to be considering other targets, with Brentford showing no willingness to part ways with Wissa this summer.

How important is Wissa to Brentford?

Wissa finished the 2024-25 Premier League campaign as Brentford's second-highest scorer after he netted 19 goals in 35 appearances.

The DR Congo international finished just one short of Mbeumo, who racked up 20 goals in 38 Premier League matches in his final season as a Brentford player.

Wissa was already a key member of the Bees squad, but his importance has undoubtedly grown following Mbeumo's move to Man United.

That is why Brentford are determined to retain his services, despite knowing that he will be able to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires next summer.

It would be very difficult for Brentford's recruitment team to find suitable replacements for Mbeumo and Wissa in the final month of the transfer window.
