Brentford transfer news: Keith Andrews delivers Yoane Wissa update following Newcastle bid

Andrews delivers Wissa transfer update amid Newcastle interest

Brentford head coach Keith Andrews has revealed that Yoane Wissa is expected to return to training next week.

The Bees have experienced a tumultuous summer, including the departure of long-serving manager Thomas Frank to Tottenham Hotspur.

Goalkeeper Mark Flekken and captain Christian Norgaard have also left for Bayer Leverkusen and Arsenal respectively.

Talismanic forward Bryan Mbeumo joined the list of key departures when he recently completed a move to Manchester United for an initial £65m.

Brentford are now facing a battle to retain another important forward, with Wissa attracting significant interest from at least three Premier League clubs.

Andrews delivers Wissa update

Newcastle United recently failed with a £25m bid for a player who has entered the final 12 months of his Brentford contract.

Wissa left Brentford's training camp in Portugal earlier this week amid the uncertainty surrounding his future.

Despite the transfer rumours, Andrews expects Wissa to come back into the fold when Brentford return to London next week.

"He has gone back to London. It was his decision, obviously because of speculation," Andrews told Brentford's media channels following Friday's 1-1 draw with Gil Vicente.

"There are clubs interested and he felt it was the right thing to go back to London. It's simple really, he folds back into the group next week when we come back to training."

In addition to Newcastle, Wissa is also believed to be attracting interest from Nottingham Forest and Tottenham.

Wissa's importance to Brentford

Brentford will be reluctant to lose another key player during the current transfer window, especially as they have already lost a prolific goalscorer in Mbeumo.

Like Mbeumo, Wissa proved to be one of Brentford's main attacking threats in the 2024-25 campaign, netting 19 goals in 35 Premier League appearances.

However, Brentford will be wary that Wissa could walk away on a free transfer next summer if they decide not to sanction his departure this summer.

The Bees are believed to be looking for £40m to sell the DR Congo international before the transfer window shuts on September 1.

Brentford will have to recruit wisely if they are faced with the task of replacing Mbeumo and Wissa in the same transfer window.
