Villarreal welcomed Sevilla to El Madrigal for the first leg of their Europa League last-16 clash on Thursday.

Sevilla took the lead after just 13 seconds when Vitolo found the bottom corner from close range, before Stephane Mbia scored a second for the visitors after 26 minutes.

Argentine forward Luciano Vietto had one back for Villarreal early in the second period, but Kevin Gameiro struck two minutes later to re-establish Sevilla's two-goal lead.

That proved the end of the scoring at El Madrigal as Sevilla secured a comprehensive first-leg lead.

8.03pmPREDICTION! In my opinion, this is a nailed-on draw. Sevilla have not been great away from home in the league this season, but they have been strong in this competition. I can see Villarreal taking the lead, but the visitors coming back to claim a 1-1 draw. There is a wonderful atmosphere here!

8.01pmSevilla's recent form has also been pretty strong – winning four of their last six matches and losing just once in the process. They will enter the match off the back of a 4-3 win over Deportivo La Coruna at the weekend, but their away form this season, especially in the league, has been disappointing.

7.58pmIn total, Sevilla have won this competition on three occasions (2006, 2007 and 2014). Villarreal, meanwhile, have reached this stage of the competition for the first time since the 2010-11 season, when they were advanced to the semi-finals before losing to eventual winners Porto.

7.52pmIn terms of their progression to this stage, the Yellow Submarine finished second in Group A behind German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach, before overcoming Red Bull Salzburg 5-2 on aggregate in the round of 32. They made it to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey before losing to Barcelona, while as mentioned, they are very much in the running for a European finish in the league. Their recent form has also been strong – winning four of their last six games in all competitions and losing just once – to Barcelona – in the process.

7.46pmIn terms of the recent meetings between the two sides, Sevilla have lost just one of the last five matches. They recorded a 2-1 win in this stadium in the league last season and have already beaten Villarreal 2-1 in the league this term. That said, there is just one place and one point separating the two teams in the La Liga table, with Sevilla sitting fifth and Villarreal occupying sixth position.
