Tottenham Hotspur beat Hull City on penalties

Tottenham Hotspur are through to the last eight of the Capital One Cup after beating Hull City on penalties.

Tottenham Hotspur have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup after beating Hull City on penalties this evening.

Christian Eriksen created a couple of early chances for the home side, setting up Younes Kaboul for a 10th-minute header, before Paulinho blasted his pass wide from 25 yards out.

Spurs broke the deadlock 16 minutes into the match when Gylfi Sigurdsson picked out the top corner of the net with a 25-yard drive.

The visitors had a chance to level 10 minutes before half time when Ahmed Elmohamady tested Brad Friedel, before Kaboul blocked the rebound from Danny Graham.

Jermain Defoe almost extended Tottenham's lead early in the second half, but his curling effort from a Kyle Walker cross flew just wide.

It proved to be a costly miss less than a minute later, as George Boyd delivered a free kick to Elmohamady to cross in to Curtis Davies. Davies initially saw his effort caught by Friedel, but the veteran keeper spilled the ball into the back of his own net to give Hull the equaliser.

Erik Lamela came close to putting the hosts back in front just over 10 minutes before full time, curling the ball in from a free kick, but Eldin Jakupovic was able to claim the ball.

Harry Kane managed to find the back of the net in the 82nd minute, but the referee had already blown his whistle for a hand ball from Defoe.

With the scores level after 90 minutes, the match headed into extra time, where the visitors were able to take the lead for the first time, as Paul McShane headed past Friedel from a Boyd cross.

However, Kane was able to equalise for Tottenham less than 10 minutes later, before setting up Sigurdarsson for a chance to slot home a winner in the final minute of extra time, but the scorer of the opening goal could not find the target this time, sending the game to penalties.

Friedel gave Spurs an immediate advantage in the shootout, saving Hull's opening effort from McLean.

Sigurdarrson, Defoe and Jan Vertonghen netted the first three spot kicks for Spurs as the home side took a 3-1 lead, but a miss from Lamela let the visitors back into it.

After a series of successful penalties, Elmohamady stepped up for Hull with Tottenham 8-7 up and scuffed his shot, giving Friedel a comfortable stop to see the home side through.

Tottenham will face West Ham United in the last eight.
