Republic of Ireland defender John O'Shea believes that his side have turned the corner following a disappointing year.

Republic of Ireland international John O'Shea feels that his side are on the up following their recent good performances.

Giovanni Trapattoni's team drew 1-1 with England at Wembley and followed it up with a 4-0 victory over Georgia.

O'Shea told reporters: "We have had our disappointments in the last 12 months or so – particularly against Germany at home.

"But Wednesday's draw at Wembley was significant because now we have proved, to ourselves more than anyone, that we can handle a big occasion and a big team and not be overawed.

"I really think that a corner has been turned – but the important thing now is that we have to follow that up with wins in the qualifiers against Austria and Sweden."

The Sunderland defender has made 85 appearances for Ireland since making his debut in 2001.
