LFP to take legal action after La Liga suspension

Spain's professional league, LFP, has begun legal action to prevent the suspension of the La Liga campaign later this month.

It was revealed on Wednesday night that the Spanish Football Federation will halt the final two matches of the season indefinitely, due to a government dispute concerning collective bargaining for television rights.

A law was passed last week which aims to create a more level playing field in the top two tiers of Spanish football by dividing TV income more evenly, but the Spanish Football Federation and the players' union have been left unhappy by the changes and have backed strike action.

"The LFP wishes to reiterate the importance of the royal decree approved by the Spanish government and emphasise its importance as an historic milestone for Spanish soccer," the LFP said in a statement, before adding that the RFEF's decision was legally "invalid".

As well as disrupting the final two matchdays in La Liga, the suspension will also affect the Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao at the end of May.
