Preview: Peterborough United vs. Wycombe Wanderers - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's League One clash between Peterborough United and Wycombe Wanderers, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Peterborough United will be aiming to make it successive wins in League One when they welcome Wycombe Wanderers to London Road on Sunday afternoon.

The Posh will enter the contest off the back of a 2-0 victory over MK Dons, while Wycombe suffered a 1-0 loss to Plymouth Argyle on Thursday, which ended a four-game unbeaten run in the league.

Peterborough were relegated from the Championship in 22nd position last season, so a promotion challenge is expected this season, and it has been a relatively successful campaign for the club to date.

Indeed, a record of 11 wins, two draws and 10 defeats from 23 matches has brought them 35 points, which is enough for sixth position in the table, one point behind fifth-placed Bolton Wanderers.

The Posh have taken four points from their last two league games against Charlton Athletic and MK Dons, recording a 2-0 victory over the latter on Thursday, with Joe Ward and Ricky-Jade Jones on the scoresheet.

Grant McCann's side will not be back in action until January 16 against Port Vale, so they will have a relatively long break after this match, which increases the importance of picking up a positive result.

Peterborough suffered a 3-1 defeat to Wycombe in the reverse match earlier this season, but they recorded a 4-0 victory when they last hosted Sunday's opponents in January 2020.

Wycombe, meanwhile, will enter the contest off the back of a 1-0 defeat to Plymouth on Thursday, with Daniel Scarr's first-half effort proving to be the difference between the two sides.

The Blues finished sixth in League One last season, which saw them qualify for the playoffs, but they lost 2-0 to Sunderland in the final, which kept them in the third tier of English football.

Wycombe have picked up 35 points from their 24 league games this season, which has left them in eighth position in the table, level on points with sixth-placed Peterborough heading into this match.

The Blues had been in strong form ahead of their loss to Plymouth, picking up 10 points from their four matches against Portsmouth, Lincoln City, Ipswich Town and Bristol Rovers.

Gareth Ainsworth's side will also have a lengthy break after this contest, with their next match not due to take place until January 14 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Team News

Peterborough have not reported any injury concerns from their clash with MK Dons on Thursday, so it could be a case of same again in terms of team selection for this match.

Head coach McCann is likely to stick with a 3-4-3 formation, with goalscorers Ward and Jones set to retain their spots in the starting XI.

Jonson Clarke-Harris missed a second-half penalty against MK Dons, but the 28-year-old has netted 12 league goals this season and will again lead the line for the home side.

As for Wycombe, Tjay De Barr will be absent after collapsing at the end of the clash with Plymouth, which led to him being taken to hospital for tests.

Head coach Ainsworth will be considering shuffling his pack for this match, with Sam Vokes and Anis Mehmeti among the options for change.

However, there were plenty of positives to take from the narrow loss to the division leaders, so it could be the same starting side for the contest on New Year's Day.

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Blackmore; Kent, Edwards, Watts; Ward, Fuchs, Taylor, Burrows; Poku, Clarke-Harris, Jones

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Stryjek; McCarthy, Forino-Joseph, Tafazolli, Jacobson; Thompson, Freeman; Al Hamadi, Horgan, Kaikai; Hanlan

SM words green background

We say: Peterborough United 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers

There is not an awful lot between these two teams in terms of quality, demonstrated by the fact that they are both on 35 points at this stage, albeit with Peterborough having a game in hand. It would not be a shock to see a home or indeed an away win, but we believe that a tight match will end all square.
