Palmeiras vs Gremio - prediction, team news, lineups

The momentum of the championship race will be front and center this Friday as table-topping Palmeiras and Gremio reconvene at the Allianz Parque for a ninth-round clash in the 2026 Brasileiro Serie A.

With the Sao Paulo side looking to cement its status at the summit and the Gaucho visitors desperate to find their rhythm, this encounter features two of the nation's top 10 clubs in a match that could dictate the trajectory of their respective campaigns.

Match preview

Palmeiras enters the tie in imperious form, sitting comfortably at the top of the table with 19 points, three clear of their closest rivals, Athletico-PR.

In eight matches, Abel Ferreira’s men have notched six wins, including a 1-0 win over Sao Paulo last time out, demonstrating the clinical consistency that has become the hallmark of the Portuguese manager’s tenure.

The Verdao attack has been the story of the season so far, racking up 17 goals to claim the title of the league's best offensive unit, and their efficiency is staggering, having found the net in 13 consecutive games across all competitions this year.

At the Allianz Parque, they are near-perfect this year, boasting 10 wins and one draw in 11 home fixtures, making them the most daunting host in Brazil.

They will hope to extend that run on Friday against a side they have beaten in the last five times they have hosted this fixture across all competitions, while they are unbeaten in the last six.

Gremio, conversely, arrives in Sao Paulo searching for an identity – currently occupying eighth place with 11 points, the Imortal Tricolor has struggled to meet expectations, recording three wins, two draws, and three losses.

Their recent 2-1 defeat to Vasco da Gama at Sao Januario has only intensified the pressure on the squad to produce a result against the league leaders.

While Gremio shows a statistical balance with 13 goals scored and 12 conceded, their inability to string together wins has hindered their progress.

They have drawn three of their last five matches, and facing the most prolific attack in the country away from home represents their toughest challenge of the 2026 season thus far.

Team News

Ferreira has a relatively settled squad but must navigate the loss of Joaquin Piquerez, who suffered a serious ankle ligament injury while on international duty with Uruguay, and in his stead, 20-year-old Arthur is expected to step in.

Long-term absentee Paulinho is nearing a return from leg surgery, but this match comes too soon, while on a positive note, Arias has returned from the Colombian national team and is available for selection.

Luis Castro faces a much more significant selection headache at Gremio, with the visitors missing several key components like Villasanti (cruciate ligament), Joao Pedro (thigh), and Marlon (fractured ankle), who are all sidelined.

Furthermore, Caio Paulista is ineligible to face his parent club, while the biggest question mark remains over midfielder Arthur Melo, who is battling to prove his fitness following a muscle injury.

All eyes will be on Carlos Vinicius, the current Brasileirao top scorer with six goals, who remains Gremio's primary threat.

Palmeiras possible starting lineup:

Miguel; Giay, Gomez, Murilo, Arthur; Allan, Pereira, Marlon Freitas, Arias; Flaco Lopez, Roque

Gremio possible starting lineup:

Weverton; Pavon, Martins, Viery, Gabriel; Nardoni, Noriega; Enamorado, Arthur, Amuzu; Vinicius

We say: Palmeiras 3-1 Gremio

Palmeiras currently possesses the most efficient attack in the 2026 Brasileirao, and their unbeatable aura at the Allianz Parque shows no signs of fading.

While Carlos Vinicius is always a threat to find the net for the visitors, Gremio’s inconsistent away form and significant injury list make them heavy underdogs.

We expect the league leaders to control the tempo and exploit a depleted Gremio midfield to secure a comfortable victory, maintaining their three-point cushion at the top of the table.
