A report claims that Newcastle United are weighing up whether to trigger Deportivo La Coruna centre-back Fabian Schar's £3m release clause.

Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez is weighing up a move for Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabian Schar, according to a report.

The Switzerland international has yet to return for pre-season training, having been given an extended rest following his three outings at this summer's World Cup.

Schar is keen for a move away from the Spanish club following their relegation from La Liga last season, and the Newcastle Chronicle claims that Newcastle could offer the 26-year-old an escape route.

United are said to have already made contact with Deportivo and have discovered that the centre-back has a £3m release clause inserted in his contract.

The report also indicates that Swansea City's Federico Fernandez is another option for Benitez, albeit on loan.
