Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic's loan move to Anderlecht has fallen through as his former club cannot afford to pay his fee, according to a report.
The 23-year-old has been left frustrated this month after boss Rafael Benitez blocked a permanent move to Brighton & Hove Albion, as he was unwilling to offload to a direct rival.
Mitrovic's hopes of playing regular football in the remaining months of 2017-18 now appear to have been dashed, too, with Sky Sports News reporting that Anderlecht have been unable to sell a player as planned to fund the move.
Anderlecht intended to make room for the Serbia international, who they had on their books for two years prior to joining the Magpies in 2015, and even flew in the striker on a private jet on Wednesday afternoon.
Hamburger SV and Bordeaux also wanted to take Mitrovic on loan, but he favoured a return to Brussels.
