The hosts threatened within the first few minutes as Danny Ings turned and fired at goal inside the box following some potent build-up play, but goalkeeper Rob Elliot pulled off a one-handed save to deny his effort.

As the game went on, things on the pitch remained tight and void of much action until the 21st minute, when Ings set up Ashley Barnes, but the striker's curling effort flew narrowly wide of goal.

Moments later, the Magpies registered their first effort on the Clarets' goal, Sammy Ameobi drawing a smart save down low from Tom Heaton.

Chances kept coming at either end, but in the 34th minute, the hosts broke the deadlock when Ings chested the ball down for Boyd, who took aim and struck a thunderous shot from 22 yards out that beat a stationary Elliot.

However, Newcastle were back on level terms just three minutes after the restart when Burnley failed to clear their lines and Daryl Janmaat's chip was converted from eight yards out by the knee of Papiss Cisse.

The visitors picked up their tempo after their goal and dominated proceedings, but Burnley managed to hold them back sternly.

In the 79th minute, Ings worked the channel well before lofting a ball into a central position towards Barnes, but Janmaat was on hand to head behind.

Ultimately, both sides were unable to strike a winner, and so had to settle for a share of the points.
