Daryl Janmaat ready to play at centre-back for Newcastle United

Newcastle United defender Daryl Janmaat admits that he is ready to play at centre-back in the coming weeks due to a crisis at the position for the Magpies.

Newcastle United defender Daryl Janmaat has revealed that he will have no problem playing centre-back if asked to do so by manager John Carver.

Fabricio Coloccini will miss his side's next three matches after being dismissed against Everton, while injuries to Paul Dummett and Steven Taylor have left Mike Williamson as the Magpies' only fit central defender.

However, the Dutchman has admitted that he is ready to step into the void in the coming weeks, including their crunch match against Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby.

"I will play in the middle of the defence if I am asked to do so, although it is not really my position," Janmaat told the Newcastle Chronicle.

"It is not really as though I have ambitions to stay there, but we all know what the situation is at the moment and if I have to play there, I will. If the team needs me there, I am confident I can do well there, even though I have not played as a central defender in the whole of my career.

"The second half at Everton was the first time I have played there so it is not something I know all that well."

Janmaat has made 32 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions this season following his move from Feyenoord.
