Louis van Gaal: 'We plan to be top of the Premier League at this stage next year'

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal's New Year's resolution is to lead his side to the top of the Premier League table at this stage of the next campaign.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has outlined his ambition to guide his side to the top of the Premier League at this stage next season.

The Red Devils had an inconsistent first three months under the Dutchman, but they have come into form with an 10-game unbeaten run which has pulled them within nine points of Chelsea and Manchester City at the top of the table.

"I think 2014 was already very exciting for me and my players but I hope we can continue and I hope for the fans at the end of 2015 we are No.1 in the league," Van Gaal told reporters.

"My New Year resolution is to keep improving our performance because you are never totally happy as a manager. You always want that perfect game and in our last game at Stoke you saw we didn't play the perfect game.

"We started very badly and once again we lost two points in an away match. We have to improve that because otherwise you cannot be champions at the end of the season."

United are in action in the FA Cup third round later today when they face League One strugglers Yeovil Town at Huish Park.
