Robin van Persie says that he is looking forward to returning to the Emirates Stadium with Manchester United, despite expecting "a lively atmosphere."

Robin van Persie has insisted that he has always respected Arsenal fans and is looking forward to returning to the Emirates Stadium this afternoon.

Manchester United travel to Arsenal later on today, and Van Persie will be afforded a guard of honour should he start on his first return to the Gunners since switching between the clubs.

The Dutchman admits that he expects a lively atmosphere, but will not be hurt by the Arsenal fans.

"I don't expect anything less than a lively atmosphere," Van Persie told The Sun. "But it doesn't hurt.

"I have always respected the Arsenal fans and I always will. They love their club so I understand their feelings. Players, staff, managers and even directors come and go, but fans will always stick with their team.

"So I am looking forward to playing at the Emirates again. I have good memories there, and it will be good to see my old colleagues, staff and friends again."

United take on Arsenal at 4pm this afternoon.
