Jose Mourinho: 'Paul Pogba will have to fight for place'

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho warns Paul Pogba that he is not guaranteed a place in the starting XI despite joining the club in a world-record deal.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has warned Paul Pogba that he will have to fight for his place in the starting lineup.

The 23-year-old returned to Old Trafford for a world-record fee of £89m earlier this week, but missed his side's opening match of the season this afternoon due to suspension.

In his absence, Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney both scored as United picked up a 3-1 win over Bournemouth, and Mourinho hinted that some of his midfielders would grow "frustrated" at a lack of playing time during the early weeks of the season.

"Pogba is very good, he's a phenomenal player. Our idea is that he will be a very important player for us," he told BBC Sport.

"But the reality is the month of August is a month for the players to feel frustration because you play one match per week. I have to select people and the ones not playing, they are frustrated.

"But in September, we have the League Cup, Europa League, Premier League and players are with their national teams. Then starts the real marathon and there is space for everybody. That's why we have such a good squad."

Pogba could make his second debut for the Red Devils at home to Southampton on Friday.
