Manchester City announce the signing of goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea.

Manchester City have announced the signing of goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea.

The 33-year-old has agreed a one-year deal with the Citizens and arrives at the Etihad Stadium following confirmation of Scott Carson’s departure upon the expiration of his contract.

Bettinelli will now link up with Pep Guardiola’s squad in time for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States and will provide competition for fellow shot-stoppers Ederson and Stefan Ortega.

“It’s an honour to sign for City,” Bettinelli told the club’s official website. “I have admired from afar what this club have achieved since Pep Guardiola arrived and now I am excited to be a part of building on that success.

“I can’t wait to work with Guardiola, Xabi Mancisidor and the excellent goalkeepers already here and see their methods up close.

“Hopefully I can contribute in training, the dressing room and on the pitch as we look to win more silverware over the next year.”

Director of football Hugo Viana added: “We’re really pleased that we’ll be adding Marcus to our squad this summer.

“He’s been in the Premier League for a long time and will bolster what is already a strong goalkeeping unit.

“His experience and mentality will hopefully complement our other senior goalkeepers while ensuring he’s always ready to perform when called upon himself.”

Bettinelli becomes Man City’s second signing of the summer transfer window after left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, whose £36m transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers was confirmed on Monday.

Sky Sports News claims that Man City are paying Chelsea a nominal fee to sign Bettinelli, who was due to see his contract at Stamford Bridge expire in June 2026.

Bettinelli leaves Chelsea after four seasons in West London, with his solitary first-team appearance coming against Chesterfield in a 5-1 FA Cup third-round win in August 2022.
