Preview: Lyon vs Fenerbahce - prediction, team news, lineups

Following a tense draw in last week's first leg, Lyon and Fenerbahce will meet again on Wednesday evening, when their Champions League playoff concludes in France.

Qualification for this season's league phase will go down to the wire, with the loser dropping into the Europa League.

Vying for one of seven spots left in Europe's top competition, Lyon travelled to Istanbul for the first leg last week, when Lois Openda's opening goal briefly silenced Stadyumu Sukru Saracoglu.

Though Fenerbahce later struck back, an away draw leaves the French side just one win away from the Champions League's main phase.

Lyon's last appearance came back in 2019, when they went all the way to the semi-finals and lost to eventual winners Bayern Munich, but they have recently shown signs of a revival.

Slowly emerging from financial strife, Les Gones finished fourth in Ligue 1 last term and reached the Europa League's last 16 under the canny management of Paulo Fonseca.

Fonseca, who has led the likes of Shakhtar Donetsk and Roma on long continental adventures, also steered his team past Sparta Prague in this season's third qualifying round.

A 3-0 home win overturned their deficit from the first leg; then, after securing a hard-fought draw in Turkiye, they beat Toulouse 2-0 their opening Ligue 1 match.

Though much has changed since they dominated French football, history will be on their side in midweek, having won five of their last six two-legged ties in Champions League qualifying.

Lyon also defeated Fener four times in the now-defunct group stage, before the pair played out a goalless draw in the 2024-25 Europa League.

Having lost nine times in qualifying since making their sixth appearance in 2008, Fenerbahce are simply desperate to reach the Champions League's main phase.

The Turkish giants were dumped out by Benfica at this time last year, which prompted Jose Mourinho's dramatic exit and the arrival of Domenico Tedesco.

Despite the latter's best efforts, Fener were still pipped by Galatasaray again, missing out on the Super Lig title to their fierce city rivals.

Tedesco has since been replaced by Ismail Kartal, who guided the Yellow Canaries past Gornik Zabrze and Sturm Graz in qualifying rounds two and three, before suffering a big setback on the domestic scene.

Despite Talisca scoring for a fifth straight game, Fener started their latest league campaign with a shock 2-1 defeat to Genclerbirligi, piling pressure on Kartal's expensively assembled squad.

Failure to beat Lyon then brought more criticism, but Saturday's 4-2 victory over Konyaspor should give them some breathing space for now.

Lyon coach Fonseca rotated his squad substantially at the weekend, but key men such as Tyler Morton and captain Corentin Tolisso will return for Wednesday's crucial clash.

However, centre-back Moussa Niakhate is struggling with an ankle injury and may have to miss out.

More positively, star man Pavel Sulc has recovered from a knee problem and Argentina international Nicolas Tagliafico is now available after his post-World Cup holiday.

While Openda should lead the hosts' attack, it remains to be seen who spearheads Fener's front line.

Both Lukaku and Vedat Muriqi offer a strong physical presence up front, but Talisca could be moved into a false nine role, allowing Marco Asensio to operate just behind.

Talisca has scored four of his side's six goals in qualifying and recently added another in the Super Lig; also in contention, Nene Doregles impressed as a substitute last week, striking the post with a speculative shot.

Elsewhere, Jayden Oosterwolde is set to join Roma, Caglar Soyuncu has a muscular problem, and goalkeeper Mert Gunok is still sidelined.

With the latter unavailable, Ederson regained the gloves for the first leg and kept his place against Konyaspor.
