Brendan Rodgers feels for Dejan Lovren after shootout defeat

Rodgers: 'I feel sorry for Lovren'

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted that he felt sorry for Dejan Lovren after the defender's penalty miss in the shootout defeat to Besiktas.

Lovren's poor finish from 12 yards handed Besiktas a 5-4 shootout victory in the Europa League last-32 tie after the two sides were locked at 1-1 on aggregate, but Rodgers refused to place any blame on the Croatian.

"I feel sorry for Dejan because he had played really well in the game, but someone has to miss, and unfortunately it was us," he told reporters.

"Dejan was happy to take a pen - you see the five penalty takers were all confident. The four before had experience before in a penalty competition this season, and they were confident. It's a shame it ended that way."

Liverpool return to action against Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
